Which is the best/preferred Prom editor program to use for the 85-89 (165) ECM?

Just curious which one to buy?

GMEpro?
Tunercat?

Promedit?
WinBin?

Can anyone give me the quick and dirty good/bad/ugly features of each?

This would be a good bit of info to have on the tech pages for people like me getting setup, or should I say, people who are behind like me!

Mark.

Winbin: Free. Now THAT is hard to beat But, the availability of the .ecu calibration files leaves a lot to be desired. There are also known errors in the ones available.

GMEPro: Good DOS based program. No complaints from me. However, there are no visual displays of the data (graphical displays).

PROMEdit: Never used it.

TunerCat: Nice windows based program. Has graphing. Initial complaints of this program surrounded the calibration files. Some of them were wrong. However, the known errors to my knowledge have been fixed. I also like TCs customer service. Although it may take a little bit of time to fix stuff ... it DOES get fixed. I described a few errors in the main program to him and also asked him to add particular parameters to the 730 calibration file - he fixed the program and added the parameters Very open to suggestions. Plus - he gave me a free calibration file for telling him about the errors.

Well, guess that answers my question after struggling with WinBin... but if i may add nother question while we're on a similar topic. Any sites where i can find howto tune and decide what needs to be tweaked, what each function does, etc? I'm no Pablo or Trax at this but i'm tryin

Ditto to branz28 request for info. I'm having fits with this 86 TPI,, and have access to high dollar snap on scanner,, but at this point don't really know what needs to be tweaked.

How much is tunercat to buy?
How much is GMEpro?

Better question, do you know of anyone getting out of the TPI stuff who'd be willing to sell their software (all the original disks, etc. so it's legal-ish)

Mark.

PS. This explains why I can't find an ecu file for the 165 ECM. None published.

PPS. The ecu's, they are specific to a particular bin file, correct? As in, you can't have one ecu file to cover many years (maf speaking).

BranZ28:
Take it from me ... I'm no expert There are guys out there (especially on the gmecm mailing list) who make my knowledge look like kids play. I know a lot about the speed density systems (730 ECM) and am doing my best to learn the various code revisions of the 165 ECM. It all comes with time. The more you put into it and the more research you do, the more you will get out of it. It just takes time, experimentation, and a lot of research. As far as sites regarding what to tweak and for what purposes I would first point you to the websites in the article in the tech section of thirdgen.org. With that said - there aren't many sites out there for this purpose. Bruce Plecan wrote a nice generalized article on tuning. I have referenced this in the main article and it is a great place to start. But, you are probably looking for something specific to your ECM. The TBI guys can view Bruce's article on the 747 ECM. But, the 165 and 730 guys won't be able to find much out there. A lot of it is learned via word of mouth (actually, word of internet e-mails and mailing lists). Regarding tuning the 165: I can't find any sites on the internet explaining how to tune cars with these ECMs. This knowlege is definitely acquired through word of internet and through experimentation.

FWIW - I will be writing part II of the EPROM articles which will explain how to tune the 730ECM for F-Bodies. Part III, MAF tuning is some time away because I need more experience.

BadSS:
Begin with the articles mentioned in the PROM article in the tech section.

Mark_ZZ3:
E-mail Terry at the address in the PROM article to get the price of GMEPro. Go to www.tunercat.com to view the prices of tunercat and the calibration files (aka ECM Definition files)

Thanks Traxion,

I had skipped right over the article section. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I should be set to go as soon as I figure out this pesky AFPR problem.

Thanks again!!

Traxion, I'll be patiently waiting for that 730 tuning article. I read through the complete archives of the GM_ecm mailing list and did not find too much info on actual tuning.
