Engine swap - do I need a custom chip?
Engine swap - do I need a custom chip?
I've got an 89 305 TPI 5spd and am putting in a 350. I understand I'll need a prom chip for my ECM. I've looked around and cannot seem to find a chip for a 350 TPI 5spd, all the chips are for autos (I guess since GM didn't make any 350 5spds due to the weak T5). Can I just use the 350 chip or do I need a custom burn?
I've read all the DIY burning vs. pre-burnt commercial threads. I know that a DIY chip will out perform any of the commercial ones, but for the time being money is REALLY tight (cuz of the new engine and tranny). So for the time being can I make due with a commercial chip (ie. make it work w/ the 5spd), run my old chip, or do I definitely need a custom chip (either DIY or taking my car to the shop and overpaying for someone else to dyno the car, burn the chip, etc)?
Thanks!

Simple, you either can take a 350 auto chip and change the switch to "Manual" from "Auto", or modify your existing 305 chip for the extra displacement and larger Injector Flow (you are using 22# injectors aren't you?).
I feel that manuals have slightly different "needs" than an auto and if I was in your shoes, I would make the adjustments to your 305 BIN and then "tweak" the VE tables and Spark Tables.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna use the 19lb injectors from my 305 or if I'm gonna upgrade to 22lb.
Anyway, to change the switch over to manual do I need the prom burning equipment or is there a physical switch on the chip (sorry I'm a beginner). If so, I don't have the means to do this at the moment.

The 350 auto chip will work fine. The difference is in the way the iac is used to keep the revs up between shifts. Im using the 350 chip thats in the tech section for a 87 350 for my setup and it works ok. And glenn is right the 5spd has diff fuel and spark curves, but the 5spd had a diff cam then the auto. If your 350 is stock I would just spend the 40 bucks on the gm 350 prom for your year. And bump up the pressure or switch to 22 or 24's

I'm using my 91 305 5-speed chip with my 350 engine. I'd say keep it.

Or is well with the key it starts?.
I'd start with a manual memcal, and then use the 305 calibration and modify as neseccary.
Kinda a PITA, but if your wanting **right** thats my 2 cents
