New Prom Burning Hardware

I'm finally gonna get into prom burning. Problem I'm having now is deciding what to buy. I'm pretty computer savvy, and I can teach myself a lot. I learn best with personal experience. I don't want to order parts that I'm not gonna need, or order the wrong parts. Money is not a major concern. I've been looking at Moates for all the parts and peices since it seems like Craig is a real stand up guy and gives great support. I don't know if I should buy an APU-1 or an Ostrich, and then which pins I would use. I've been leaning towards the APU since I'm more familiar with it, but I still don't know what to get. I want to burn chips and read in real time, that's it. I have an 89 lo3 and I can mount, remove, fabricate anything, so that's not an issue. What would you guys suggest? What are you guys using?

I always recommend get away with as cheaply as you can at first.

Buy a programmer and some chips and use TunerCat(my choice) or TunerPro.

Get only what u need to get started.

It takes a lot of work, a lot of reading and a lot of time to become proficient at it.

Its not for everyone, that being said, your already checking things out and looking at what works for you.

There are many many links in the stickies above and a lot of good info concerning your very question.

Maybe I'm biased and shouldn't point it out (so forgive me, please), but TunerCat isn't as inexpensive as it gets. =)

I don't know who this guy is but I agree with him.........LOL

I bought Tunercat years ago but now ONLY use Mangus's Tunerpro.

Try it you'll like it. Also checkout the Tuning stickies that would apply to your car at the top of the TBI board and you will get links to some definition files for your car to use with Tunerpro. If you need help with this ask.

Also agree that Craig Moate's is a stand up guy. He treated me right

I find myself using tunerpro more and more. You know we all appreciate your work.

I do know... perhaps I shouldn't have said anything, as I wasn't fishing for compliments.

Ok, here's what I've come up with. This is a list of the goodies I'm planning on getting for startup:

Moates.net Goodies...

APU1
G2 adapter (measure spacing before I purchase)
S2 ZIF socket

What do you guys think? Just making sure it's everything I'm gonna need to actually start the learning process. Anyone have suggestions for a solder gun or a solder sucker?

Cornholio, you shouldn't need to unsolder anything if I remember right. I bought all my hardware from moates as well and everything came out and went in without soldering. The height of the adapter and zif socket though did force me to get creative with reattaching the cover on the ecm.
