chip programs.

is there any way that we could gather a data base of diffrent chip manufatuers programs that they burn on their chips. This way we could try diffrent chips till we found one that ran the best in our cars and then modify that program to better suit our cars. Just trying to take some of the guess work out of the chip burning.

Greg,

Unfortunately that would be walking a fine legality line. Simply put, if we publish companies BINs then we would be giving away their coding and 'development time' for free. However, we could hold a repository of BINs built by individuals who aren't affiliated with a company and who don't sell their chips.

Sounds good to me. I know that at diy-efi.org they have some bins. But personally I think it would benefit some of the beginners. The person could include a small text file of their mods and possibly a brief desciption of changes. Or we could get really carried away and do a profile of the car and owner and current bin. If thirdgen doesn't have the bandwidth I have some space. I'm game.

well there would be a legal line we might just cross but they sell the chips not the info on them. it is just information. much like the mp3 but alot harder to use you have to buy some equipment before you can use it. and any one who uses it was not going to buy a chip anyway. i mean we don't need to say it is a certain companies bin we can say that it is good or it sucks and allow the user to find out for them self if it is the right bin for their car or if it is close.

I got in a discussion with someone else about this before. They said that the company who makes the custom chip started out with GM's code didn't they? So they changed a few things and slapped their name on it (I'm sure they researched before the slap). Really I'm more interested in what changes people make where that have positive effects. You definetly could be crossing some lines if you copy company A's chip and try to sell it. I just want to see what has worked for other people and why. Or even what hasn't worked and why.

hahaha, i like greg's answer. You could even market it like generic perfume...smells just like TPIS-IV. Tinker with one small parameter (change TCC lock-up by 1 mph or something) and it's unique.

Guys,

The GMECM list is putting together a HUGE repository of bins. I'll take a gander at how they are going to handle the legality issue and then maybe we'll follow in their footsteps.

The GMEMC guys have some bins...but not very many.... How about we just make our own listing on this board?.... Stock bins, and then each individual's custom bins (if they want to), and their mods and results they got from using it. Shouldnt take up too much space for just the f-body related ones.....

I'm all for this. It seems like we could at least take some of the trial-and-error out of it if we have other people's solutions for their particular combination to refer to.

Now, I'd love for the library to contain stock BINs, aftermarket BINs, etc. So we can see what was going on in their heads as well, but I guess that all depends on how thin a legal tightrope the owner of this board is willing to walk!

i'm new to this and have just ordered the parts necessary to program and read the e-proms but what i know is that i have a slp chip,a hypertech,a ads and the stock chips for a 1990 350 tpi speed density system--and cant wait to see what differences there are between their files.i will let everyone know what the differences are if not on the board-there is always e-mail! maybe someone will help me find a good starting point to work from with my extra boost.

I like the idea of a bin repository. I myself am just now getting into proms. I haven't decided on a burner (no internal slots and a little pricey for external ones)
but i am looking into how you modify them. Personally for a beginner like me, it would help me greatly to see the stock GM chip. Then a reprogrammed one so i could see what adjustments were made to gain performance, etc. Just my .02 people.

If i am not mistaken all the bins on the gmecm site are all factory UN-molested bins. the intent is to have good references for everyone to pool from. I think that if another one is to be started with modified bins that here is a good place. I also think that if that is the case that a writeup on what they came out of, & specifics on the application ought to be stuck to it somehow.

as the old saying goes garbage in garbage out. I think that this is why they dont want any modified bins on the GMECM library. all the bins there are supposed to have been tuned to the application that the general put them into. for me to pull that bin & hack it to death cause i dont know what i am doing & then to put it into the "3rd gen" library is a problem waiting to happen (probably not for 3rd gen, but for the unsupecting sap that puts it into his car).

I think that a small libraray, closely held to someones boosm, might work, albeit time consuming. Dont get me wrong, i have two bins that i could contribute, but they dont work worth a darn on my car, i doubt that they are going to work any better on anyone elses.

my2c, here.

Well, I have a server with plenty of space to put eprom dumps on, and I think that I have quite good bandwidth too - 10 Mbit....

Just e-mail me all the bins with a description and I'll organize it all. Just send them to prevost.3@osu.edu and I'll start the page after I get 3 bins.
Thanks
