Help with stock chips

Ok, I have been nozing around here for a few weeks, and I am eventually going to get off my can and actually buy the stuff so I an start to do some porgramming.

My situation is this: I am currently running a reasonably modified .040 over 305. (You can see my mods in my sig) I am currently running a stock 1986 chip in this not so stock 87 Firebird. I know that there is a difference between the $32 & $32B, but since NO one wants to tell me what the difference is, I am going to ask a diffferent question.

My Question is this: Will a stock 350 chip from an 87 GTA or 88 GTA work better for me?, since I still have a 305, will this be a big problem with running ritch (outside of closed loop). Or should I go with a stock 87 305 Automatic trans chip and go from there because it is closer to my displacement.
The reason I ask is my cam specs are closer to the 350.

I want to use an 88 chip if I can because they had more horsepower. Since they both use $32B it should work..right???

You should start with '89 6E code IMO. '89 305 automatic. APYM3493 is the one.

If you have a 5speed you want a 305 5speed bin.

Why go with the 89?, does it not eliminate the cold start injector?? which I have, no biggie, the other injectors would compensate.

What is the advantage of the 89 Chip over the 87-88 chips? Does it perform better? Will I get any trouble codes??

And with my mods, could I go with the 350 Chip? because it would be closer to my cam specs.

And Yes I HAVE an AUTOMATIC, so I cant go with the M5 chip.

A "subject only" search for 6E will answer all your questions.

Start with the 305 bin. Cams specs are only part of the equation.

How is your cam more like a 350s? I know that in my 91 camero manual the 305 tpi and 350 tpi have the same cam.

How about the ARAP chip? You only need to change injector constants, fan control and possibly VATS to make it work.... And of course unplug the coldstart injector, since the '89 ARAP code does not need that.

Of course you have some tuning to do even after that, but just to get you started!

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion, I think that is where I will start. With the ARAP.

I did a subject only search on the ARAP and the only thread, that I found, with a link to get the ARAP, was broken, any other places.

Yes, you correct, partially. The 350 TPI & the 305 TPI with the M5 transmission DID have the same cam, The 305 with an A4 Trans used the same cam as the TBI (LO3) engine. The biggest difference between the 305 TBI & the TPI were the heads, other than the induction system of course.

lets not get off PROM topic.

I have an 89 Auto bin file that was for a 305...if I had it to do all over again, I'd have saved my 35 bucks and gone with a known 350 bin and worked from there.

ARAP is a 350 bin.

Huh...looking at your sig, our cars are almost identical...

And for your reference...maybe no one knows what the difference between the 32 and 32B code is...

Greg,
Thanks, I was wondering if anyone did know what the diff was between 86 & 87-88 BINs. I went to Tunercat's web site & he had NOTHING diffferent between the two. Which, in reality is puzzling, why have seemingly identical PROMS but have differnt decoders.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you run in the 1/4 & Trap speed.

Thanks

John

I did, there was really not much to it, the only modifications from the stock ARAP is the injector flow rate, VATS flag and FAN N/O (Normally Open) Flag.

You'll probably want to change some more things, but this I believe is a good starting point, because the car will run - And I haven't changed anything critical in it.

ZaphodB,
I basically used the chip as-is and it works wonderfully. The onlly thing I played with was the Fan temp setting. I lowered it to around 100°C on & 97°C Off. This past weekend, I went to St. Ignace for a car show, its about 230 miles from where I live and I got a solid 23.5 MPG, (Consider I dont think we ever were going slower than 70-75 MPH.

Thanks again, I think it is a great start. I chose NOT to change the Spark timing variables for 2 reasons, 1) high 3.73:1 gear, & 2) I have a slightly hotter cam than stock. It does seem to run great though, thanks...
