Can't you use a small screwdriver, and remove the eprom from the piggy back?.
Then nothing additional is needed.

If you can't get the chip out of the module, just build yourself an adaptor out of a apiece of experimental circuitboard and some standard connectors.... Thats what I use to program chips without removing them from the memcal.....

On the other hand, I strongly suggest that if you have a spare memcal, carefully desolder the chip and solder a socket in its place, so much simpler... Or better yet, get a flash!

Bruce, I found that with my ADS piggy-back, that while I can use a jeweller's screw driver to R&R the eprom from the piggy-back, it starts to bend the pins pretty bad after a few R&Rs. I found making the "adapter" as per Traxion's article from the 34 pin header works the best, especially since I inserted the Flash Prom into the piggy-back.

Might even be better long term to use a ZIF there. Mine was good for a couple hundred cycles just pushing the prom in and out, hmm, come to think of it was using different proms, maybe not one enough times, dunno

I am using the exact method that Glenn has mentioned. I have the Flash PROM in the piggy back and I never take it out. I use the modified header and program the EEPROM while it is still in the piggy back. This works out well. I have two piggy backs, two EEPROMs and two MemCals. One is in the car and the other sits on my desk by my programmer so that I can just program and then swap it out.

I gave up on R&R my eproms out of my ADS piggy-back because I noticed the AT29C256 Flash Proms seemed a bit wider than my socket on my ADS piggy back. I don't know if it is the AT29C256s or the socket, but it made R&R a pain and resulted in bending the pins too much.

It probably has a lot to do with my "weird" fingers that have a knack to altering size...one moment they are small enough to fall between "two keys" on a keyboard...and then too large that I hit both keys.

Also, I found just putting the piggy back in the "adapter" just faster and easier.

Has anyone given thought as to making these adapters and selling them? I would be interested in buying one if it would save me a little time. I am not all that proficient at soldering circuit size stuff anyway..

Read Traxion's article, he lists the P/N for the 34-pin header from Digi-Key. About 5 minutes with a Dremel, is all it takes to convert it into a 28 pin adapter to plug the memcal directly into it.

This board is not about "making a profit"...it's about DIY. Remember, it doesn't have to look pretty, it just has to be effective.

I have read the article before. It is informative, but the pictures do not even load, so it is quite limited for creating an adapter. The description of how to create it just does not quite surfice. I am sorry if what I requested was out of line, some of us do not have the same expertise as you, but we are still willing to try...

So no one has pics? And the reason I don't R&R the prom is because it's a real pain sometimes.
