Hi Gang,
I am new to this section and needless to say I am fascinated with this. I tried to read some of the files asscociated with the Prom Burning Introduction and when I clicked on them, this is what I got:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /VOL4/96398/162145/1138118.jpg on this server.

Am I doing something wrong or are they down for some reason?

Also, I read in one of the posts that for @$250 you can build up a laptop to act as a scanner. I pay more than that for updates on my Snap-On Scanner. What happens with different model years, or is this for reading the BIN file?

Click on EPROM Programming. Dirk is in the process of moving those pics to thirdgen.org's server so this problem will be resolved shortly.

Leo,

That Laptop/scanner you are refering to is Diacom, and its just software and a cable that allows you to view operating parameters like a scantool. The updates you purchase from Snap-On include things like Troubleshooter updates, new DTCs as they come out, and other things. I make sure I keep my Snap-on Vantage updated, its to valuble of a tool.

Oh yeah, and your Snap-On scantool also has things like bi-directional controls, something Diacom can't offer. You have an MT-2500 right?

If you have a maf system, 165 ecm you can use Craig Moates free software that does everything that diacom does. I'm not sure but I think that it'll work for a 730 ECM but it might ake some meesing around. All you need is a cable that you can build or buy from AKM as mentioned in Traxions article and a laptop. It's such a simple program that any laptop with dos will do. I'm using a 386.

Yes, I have had it since 1990. I have to be selective about the updates that I get because of the price. I have the Vantage and was able to pick up an update from the internet to bring it up from a V1 to V3 for about half Snappy's price.

Diacom is great for PROM burning becuase its an easy to use system to watch data. But if you are in the auto repair field, the MT-2500 is the way to go, so I would just stick w/ that. I bought my Vantage w/ Version 3.0 already, so I have yet to buy an update for it. The Scantool I use is the Tech2, and updates are free via the GM Access Server.

GMTech/anyone:

Can you download lots of data from the MT2500 snap-on scan tool somehow??? I have one, too, and it doesn't look promising from the manual. Jut looks like you can make a remote terminal out of a laptop, or something. The MT2500 does take short "movies" which are not big enough for me and are not downloadable (word?). Would like to have lots of data to download and analyze with Excel...

HELP

I'm telling you if you want lots of data available to excel, (in fact it saves directly in excel format) you should get craig moates program, it's really good, and if your burning a prom, by your presence on this board I assume you are, it's does everything you need and more. Plus it's free.

Could someone PLEASE transfer those graphics over to the thirdgen.org server??

I just ordered my '89 harness and want to begin the repinning process for my #730 ecm. I wish to begin bench testing my miniram project this winter.

I've got a FLASH EEPROM to add to my socket, and should start ordering the prom burning stuff in September. Hopefully I'll have my shortblock done by Labor day and I can start saving up for the last pieces of the shortblock puzzle: Worked cylinder heads (I wanna be like Tim Siford ) and a hairy SD program to make it purr at idle and roar at WOT.

(Hi Trax! Congrats on the low 12's, btw.)

I guess old news is still good news. Heh heh ... wait till I hit 11's. Now if I could just get the money for the Denny's Driveshaft, the PBM coating for my LTs, and the Mufflex Y-pipe I could actually give it a go!

Oh yea ... I talked with Dirk awhile ago about moving the pics. I also just sent him a new e-mail about the same thing. I may update the PROM article to include the FLASH stuff as well as a pointer to the newest $6E stuff. We'll see.

i've asked before.. and didn't have a laptop, or any time, but now that I have a laptop, and some(very little.) time, I'll ask again. Is there any software, like Craigs for the TBI computers? I have plans for a pretty wild setup a few years down the road, but I want to use the TBI, kind of a simple but fast EFI car GM should have built in the first place as my senior design project. From what I can tell, it will require extensive PROM work, so I figure I should start now, but I can't seem to find any info on burning PROMS for the stock TBI computer.

I have a 92 RS if that makes a diff in computers. Thanks.

Search for 747 and 8746. Lockers (a high end DIY scantool) is another to search for if you have some electronics knowledge.

I have the snap-on MT-2500 scanner.
Snap-on has additional software called Scan-Grafix that lets you see and graf live data and record it on your laptop direct from the scanner.

Thanks guys.. the Snap On scanner is out of the question. I'm an entering freshman in college, which as is well known means I have NO money. I'm guessing my ECM is a 746 then? I'll search for it.. thanks.
