2732A Eprom

Here is a good one: Maybe someone can figure it out for me.
I took a stock chip(2732A) from a 8746 ECM erased it and when I tried to program it I get a "programming error".
I check and it says it is erased. I click on program compare and it says "it can be reprogramed". I click on move device to buffer and then click on edit buffer and guess what? The former file is still there.
What gives anybody know? Do they put some code in there to prevent writing over it?
Haven't had this problem with other eproms, just 2732A.(two of them same thing).

This is a factory EPROM right?

If so I've had some strange problems with factory 2732A's. Some just won't program. IIRC there was some talk in the GMECM archives of the same type trouble.

I tried different programming voltages etc and nothing worked.

Sounds like you've gotten the programming voltages wrong. That 2732A might be a plain 2732. Or slightly weak, and need a higher programming voltage.

I'm about ignoring what's said on the chip anymore, just start at the lowest programing volatge and then set up one voltage atta time till it programs.

If the former file is still there, then the chip did not erase - unless the programming software is buggier than I care to imagine. Fact: Until the chip erases, you won't get a successful write, regardless of programming voltage level. Maybe try cleaning the window with acetone or isopropanol - did GM apply a coating to desensitize it to UV? Maybe try progressive doubling of erase time out to 1 hour or more (nothing to lose).

Programming only sets 1's to 0's - there is no mechanism in the 2732(A) architecture to prevent this - but you must start out with 1's, which doesn't seem to be happening with this particular chip. Big question - why does the software not pick up on the non-erased condition until it actually tries to burn the chip? Which sofware is this?

I'm using the Pocket Programmer from Intronics and their software. The progammer does recognize the chip as being erased ( all FF's. Left it on the UV lite for 30mins.
It will begin programming for a few lines then it stops. Once it got halfway.

Well I guess I give up, there is no way to get these factory 8746 eproms to program. I have tried everything, erased them for 1 hour ( they do erase and are marked 2732A)didn't help a bit. There has to be something they do to them to keep anyone from rewriting them, I just can't figure it out. I'm out and trying to find someplace to buy some 2732A's.

Don, I had the same problem with the factory chips that I had. I also use the pocket programmer. I bought six chips from JDR and have had no problem since. They erase in less than 10 minutes and program in a couple of seconds. By the way how's that 383 running? I can't remember, what car is that eng. in?

The 383 is in a 1987 El Camino.
With my last adjustments to the timing and fuel tables I hit a home run, the INT-BLM stay in the 127-130 range most of the time and it just gets an occasional ping under hard load with 87 octane. I need to do some WOT plug reading to make sure the AFR is correct, might go to the dyno before going to the track on Sept. 8th.
Thanks for the tip on the chips, what is the exact number to order?
TIA
Don>>>
