I read somewhere recently that if you change the prom ID to 0xAA that it disables the checksum routine. You planning on running an emulator?

Would I do this in Pocket Programmer's editor? If so, at what location is the PROMID?

Or, can I just put this in the PROMID section of TunerCat? (Wouldn't that work out to entering 170 in the id field of tuner cat?)

It isn't the prom id that needs to be changed, it's the mask id! The mask id is also the check byte. Editing the prom id does nothing except change what is output through the aldl stream, nothing more. I know this is an old topic but I was just doing a search and noticed the typo. Besides....the prom id is 16bit, "AA" is only 8bit so what part of the prom id would you edit, common sence says that doesn't make sence.
The location of the prom id and mask id are usually next to each other. In the 8746 and 7747 (TBI ecms) location D002 and D003 are the prom id and the mask id is at D004. If you've got Craig Moates multiprogram it's best to set the mask id to AA, prom id can be anything you want. Locations D000 and D001 are the checksum which matters if mask id is anything other than AA.

Newbie type question

Does disabling the checksum routine serve any other purpose besides allow the use of an emulator?

Not really, none that I can think of. Except maybe you're using an editing program that isn't recalculating the checksum.
