G1 memory adapter; whacky contact?
hi
i use a G1 memory adapter fpr tuning my vette..after several chip changes (ZIF), i got the following conditions...
insert chip, start..SYS...whiggling the chip/g1 assembly a bit around..car starts fine...
i observed, the chip/g1 assembly sits relarively loose in the ECM socket.
tried another, new g1 adapter, seems to work like it should...
ECM pins are tight, no loose contact here..
anyone observed a similar condition?
thank you

i assume you are refering to a ZIF inserted into a standard socket? my ZIF had round pins that seemed to fit well into a standard socket. YET i too had the issue of a CE light and resulting limp mode. I would reinsert the chip and all was well for a couple weeks. I think the bumps in road caused a loose connection for me. not sure if issue was sock to ZIF or ZIF to prom connection. I ended up discarding the ZIF and running the prom in standard socket.

i will try and resolder every connection, maybe this helps...
i did the same thing...inserted the ZIF in a new G1 and everything ok for now..when im done with tuning, i will skip the ZIF, but for now its real useful
thanks

ok, update...the thing started over again...
insert a new prom, SYS light flashing...
then i whiggle around the chip/adpater assembly, everything ok...
i really dont know where the bad contact is....ECM pins seems to be tight...

where did you buy the ZIF? i thought i read Moates discontinued ZIF due to issues that you are experincing. had i soldered my zif in it may have worked as i am uncertain where the loose conection was.
is it permanently installed(soldered in place of a standard socket?)

hi Ronny
the ZIF come with the Moates adapter and is held in a socket, not permanently soldered
maybe i should just try another ZIF..
thank you

unreliable connection possibly at both sides.....round pins are durable but maybe they dont maintain good contact. when i discontinued ZIF the standard socket was no problem before or after. I did use a radio shack prom installer and that worked well along with a powerful pair of reading glasses.
now i am a happy user of Prominator. no more chip BS. just point and click.

yes, i noticed, that the ZIF uses round pins..other ZIF´s use square ones...
i have an Ostrich, but it seems to be very sensitive to electric noises...
you mentioned the prominator....can you tell me more about his?
thank you

Re: G1 memory adapter; whacky contact?
The problem I experienced with one of the older ZIF/G1 units was that the position of the ZIF prevented the G1 board from fully seating into the computer. After a little judicious use of an exacto knife to carve out some of the lower center on the ZIF I could get it to snap into place properly. No problems since then.
Re: G1 memory adapter; whacky contact?
my prominator is 95% flawless. had a couple dead .bins after downloading but that was 1 out of 50 loads and was most likely user error. no biggy just reboot and reload .bin.
i have a 5+ bin "clicker" that allows me to hold various states of tune. nice for AE with differing levels of shot. today i have a VAFPR bin in pos #2 and my non VAFPR bin in #1.
ECU is back up under dash with one lead for Prom and another for datalogging "whats up" laying on floor at passanger side.
permanent install.
