Absolutely so, in fact it is easiest to learn to tune a stock engine with no modifications.

Stock GM tunes are far from perfect.

Re: Stock tuning

U can expect gains in mileage, drivability and power depending on how far your willing to go when u "tune" your vehicle.

U can do far better than the factory tune.

The more close to pure stock u r, the easier it is to learn.

It will take reading and time to learn your new craft.

Read those stickies up top and then read them again.

later

Re: Stock tuning

ive been over most of them, some detailed reading and some skimming for understanding purposes. the only thing i havent quite gotten figured out yet is what it all means and stands for.. the tables on winaldl, and exactly the steps on what to do. basically as informed as i am, it seems buy the stuff plug it in and tune. but thats way to basic to learn anything. maybe i need to read again and more

Re: Stock tuning

i read most of the stickies before i got my tuning stuff.
a lot of them didn't make much sense until i actually started tuning & could see what was going on.

i was getting around 20~21 highway when i first got my car going, after playing with the tune for a while i was up to 25 & it ran much smoother & had better response.
i just got back from a road trip up to east Texas. running around the speed limit most of the time, A/C on & using cruise control, i got around 29 MPH. 330 miles on 11.2 gallons going up. i don't know what i got coming back, i haven't filled it back up. it will be lower im sure as i was up around 80+ for about 2 hours. im sure there is still some more MPG in the tune.
i know i could have done even better without running the cruise once i got up in the hill country, my cruise control is pretty aggressive, on some of the hills it kicks the trans down to second gear.

Re: Stock tuning

when i got my stuff, i went with the USB AutoProm, a G3 Bank Switching Adapter, & the EX remote switcher.

i plan to get a wideband O2 pretty soon.

you can start with the BURN1, some chips & a ZIF or 2, a cable to data log, & a chip adapter unless you feel comfortable cutting up your MEMCAL.

Re: Stock tuning

a ZIF is a chip socket that has a lever on it it so you can easily install or remove the chip without damaging it.
this is a ZIF,
http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...products_id=45

a wideband O2 sensor is a sensor that you can watch/check the air fuel ratio with, all thirdgens came stock from the factory with a narrow band O2 sensor. a narrow band is only accurate in a very small AFR range.

some wide band O2 products, http://www.moates.net/index.php?cPath=48

i just noticed, you have a TBI car, for that you may want to look into the EBL,
