First Engine build tune

Hey guys. Im kinda new to DIY proms. Ive been toying with it for about a year now. I use tuner pro with moates chip burner. Ive done a few tunes for my car but now I built a brand new motor for it. Ive read the stickies above alot and have a few books on the subject, but its still all new to me. Here is the run down.
383 w/ SuperRam TPI
58mm throttle body
TPIS big mouth intake
TPI parts AFPR
30# Accel injectors
195 CC AFR heads
calculates to about 9.5:1 cr with 76cc heads
TPIS zz409 cam
Cam specs. Duration
287 287
Duration at .050
226 226
Gross Lift
.520 .520
Lobe Speration
112
180 stat
No A.I.R.
no A/C

Im starting with Super AUJP V3 with CCP
Ive already made changes to reflect 383 cylinder volume, 30# injectors and fan enable temps to run with 180 stat.
Is there anything you guys think I should change before I start it up for the first time?

If you deleted the EGR...make sure that's gone. I would set the dist. setting to 6 or 8* depending on what you want to set it at. Set idle to 750 rpms from 68* C and above. In the main SA table, if its stock between 600-800 and between 40-70kpa...I would go to 23.20* of timing in that block. Set your WOT to about 28*.....that would be from 3600-6000 and 90-100kpa. That way detonation is not a problem if your using 93 octane....if you are using less then decrease it a little bit. Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Re: First Engine build tune

I think Yenko has given you a good starting point. One other thing I would suggest, make sure you MANUALLY adjust your IAC (per the Technical Artilce link on the Home Page) around 50 rpm less than the minimum idle speed (when hot).

On a stock engine, people set the IAC to 450 rpm because the stock idle speed is so low. When you start increasing your idle speed, the low stock setting can often result in idle problems...including "hunting".

This is NOT a prom setting, but the manual setting when you adjust the IAC. This is what the idle speed would be if you had a serious problem and went into Limp Mode.

Just follow the procedure for per the link below, but instead of 450 rpm, set it to 50 rpm less than what your lowest desired idle speed (when hot) will be.

Ok thanks for the info guys. I will make those changes. I just have to wait for my trans to be finished then I can bolt it up and fire it up.

This engine would sing to 6200 and then fall on its face. Ended up that the stock valve springs in the AFR heads could not take the TPiS cam. We switched over to the 918 Comp Cam beehives.
Did you have to do any machining or were they just bolt on and go?

I erronously violated forum policy when I made my last post. If more details are needed please PM me.

As for the vlave springs. No machining was needed. They dropped right in with the proper retainers and locks. Revved all the way to 6800 after that.

Re: First Engine build tune

Ok I got the car running now and Im using the tune DaveCS1 shared with me and the car runs pretty good. I still need to set my minimun idle speed, I have a slight surge at idle that comes and goes.
The problem is I think the car is running too hot. I have a 180 stat and set the fans to come on at 200 and turn off at 180. The fans turn on but never turn off. The temp may go down to 195 but thats it. Everything on the engine just seems way too hot. The BLM's are at 130 - 132. Could it becuase its running too lean? Should I just swicth tunes and try a different one or continue working with the one I have. I may just swicth to the super AUJP V3 tune.

Should you set the idle in park or drive, I have heard it
both ways, someone also said to disconnect the est wire
Thanks

Re: First Engine build tune

Remember that the "closed throttle Idle RPM table" is for "in gear" only when making changes. The values will only result when in gear.
watch for knock with the SA settings. Some heads like the added spark, some don't and have to reduce it a bit.
I don't think you want EST unplugged for idle settings. Run it as normal to get it set right.
Sounds like a nice combo, good luck.

Re: First Engine build tune

I understand the idle issue and how to adjust it but my problem is as I stated about the car running too hot.

Re: First Engine build tune

its not unusual for a fresh motor to run a little warmer than one with some miles on it.
running around 200 or so at idle is fine. if you had a 195 stat, it would run around 210 or so.
with a 180 stat you will need a higher off temp, try around 195.
having the off temp the same as the stat the fans will never turn off.
i've got a 180 T-stat i have my on temp set at 205 & off temp at 197. depending on the weather, on the hiway i run around 185~195, at idle with the A/C on or off its a little warmer, 195~210.
i thought about going to a little cooler stat, maybe a 170, but my normal drive to work is only about 12~13 miles and when i go to the store its about 2 miles round trip. with my short trip driving and a cooler stat i would need to change my oil more often because i feel it wouldn't get warm enough for long enough to burn the condensation out of the oil.

Re: First Engine build tune

Ok thank you I'll adjust my temps and see what happens. I just found I have to replace my dist. gasket because it decided to start spitting oil after I adjusted the timing and now it wont stop. I have it tight but I guess I have to use a different gasket.

There should be plenty of clearance regardless of gasket thickness.
You might be bottoming out and could ruin the dizzy if you run it like that for too long.

Ok It was fine until I adjusted the timing so I will have to check it out.
