7747 prob when install new prom socket

i cant for the life of me get an ecm to work when i solder in a new socket. so far ive tried 3 different ecm's. they all worked with the stock chip before i soldered in a new socket. all 3 of them will blink the ses light fast and from what ive read that means its not reading from the prom. i actually have reason to believe that the problem is the ribbon cable breaking. on the last ecm i did i was very very careful to flex those cables as little as possible but i still ended up with the same result. i cant find anything on the net about this problem. am i the only one? is there a trick to doing a socket swap that im missing? the only thing i think i can do to fix it would be to solder in a new set of ribbon cables.

Re: 7747 prob when install new prom socket

I doubt it is the ribbon cables, never had an issue with them. Is the new PROM being put in in the proper direction, with the notch toward the inside of the ECM?

RBob.

When you're testing the ECM, are you using the stock PROM? If you're not and using a new EPROM, are you using the correct offsets when programming the EPROM?

Re: 7747 prob when install new prom socket

im using a stock prom. every ecm worked before i soldered in the new socket and i know how to solder lol. the last ecm i took to work with me so i could use professional equipment to remove the old socket. i even have a co worker that used to work for a company that refurbed automotive computers of all types and even he is a little baffled. he does have a few ideas for me to check its just that it seems that im the only person with this damn problem and its driving me crazy! its such a simple process and i cant get it to work.

Re: 7747 prob when install new prom socket

any body have any more suggestions? i tried again yesterday with a different socket and it still doesnt work! this is going to drive me nuts! when i put the stock prom in the ses light comes on for about half a second then just blinks really fast. when i put one of my burned proms in the light just comes on solid and never goes off. so far this has happened with three different ecm's and same as usual, when i put a stock un-touched ecm in everything works fine. ses light comes on off then back on and when i start the engine the light goes off. my ride has been down for about 3 weeks because of this and the summer is already half over. oh yea and all the ecm's i have came out of the junk yard if anybody thinks that matters in some way. ill do dome more poking with the ohm meeter but i cant imagine that im the only person with this really really bad luck lol.

The only thing I can think of is a bad solder joint or burned trace.

Where do you live? If you're close to me, I can bench test the ECMs.

Well, I guess I'm not very far compared to where you could be. lol

I'm in Brantford Ontario.

The test bench simulates an engine running. I can use it to diagnose most problems with ECMs, especially when it's a modification like this.

I most commonly use it to test code and learn more about how ECMs work, and to verify modifications to ECM before re-installing them into a vehicle.

That could work.

Worse come to worse, I do have a modified '7747 here that I use on my test bench.

Re: 7747 prob when install new prom socket

ok well i just re did one of my ecm's for the millionth time. i checked every pin for continuity to every place in the ecm that each pin goes to. it all checked out fine with the ohm meeter. when i put it in the vehicle i got no ses light what so ever! that was a new one for me. every other time i had a messed up ecm it would either blink really fast or just stay on solid. it did start up really quick like it has with a working ecm but unfortunately i didnt bring my laptop home from work so i wasnt able to see if i was able to collect data. unless anybody has any other ideas im going to give this one more try and of it doesnt work im going to through these ecms in the trash and find somebody that has a working modified one they will sell me. ive honestly lost track of how many times i have tries this and im tired of it. it even has the electronic tecs at work baffled as to what the heck is going on and all those guys do all day is repair pc boards! lol

Re: 7747 prob when install new prom socket

At this point about all I can suggest is to have someone that has successfully performed the modification to look at your ECMs and either get them working or modify another one for you.
