Re: Chip problems

If you remove you need the appropriate chip installed. Need not be factory.

Are you seeing a code for prom?

I don't think he means that indepth.

I think he just means what parts (plug and play) need to be removed.

Without knowing the exact vehicle you have, and what engine it is equipped with, it's difficult to tell you exactly what to look for.

In any case, the OBD1 GM ECMs will have a removable panel that is held on with 2 1/4" headed screws. Under this cover you will find a MEMCAL (large blue item), or a 24 pin EPROM that is in a black plastic carrier.

Since you say that it has an aftermarket chip already, and uses a MEMCAL, it may have a MEMCAL adapter installed, that retains the stock MEMCAL, plugged into the side of it, that retains certain parts of the MEMCAL.

Re: Chip problems

If you have to put your foot to the floor you are in clear flood mode. The ecm shuts off injector pulse. Sounds like you have a rich condition , I would pull off the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and check for signs of fuel. The next step would be to cycle the key several times and start pulling spark plugs. I suspect a stuck open injector or injectors. A bad cts, tps will also cause a rich running condition.

Re: Chip problems

77-730 ! That is the correct ecm it is a remanufactured cardone iirc the factory replacement for a 1227730. What makes you think the ecm is faulty ? No communication in field service mode or with a scanner ?
