Swap ECM or tune the devils away?
Bought a 88 F-bird from a Mr. Red Neckerton, 305TBI was long gone and a 350TBI from a '94 truck was thrown in.
Electric fan hotwired, parts missing, etc. The works.
Car runs like doodoo. My FIL has 2 Camaro 305TBIs and they run like champs. This has been my project car to get running well again, and aside from some paint and body work, the engine and electrical stuff and really all thats needed.
Poking around in the interior after we worked all the *** stains out of the carpet (it WAS the 80s-90's afterall) and was looking into why tuning the engine was so Bob-Saget expensive.
Come to find out that I can get a Willem PROM encoder for cheap, and 29C256 chips for cheaper. Things are looking up!
(I'm an ATMEL coder from waaay back)
Pull some sticky-note-lookin thing off of where the ECM is supposed to be, and I run the numbers....
305TBI
700R4 Auto
The stock chip.
WHUT. Mr. Neckerton must have thought it was OK to run the 350 engine off of a 350 chip.
So my question... do I have to replace the ECM with a 350 one?
Or can I just tune the prom to tell the ECM its a 350 now and react accordingly?
Thanks!

Easy as putting either the correct prom for 350 in or tuning your own to work. No ECM swap unless wanting to upgrade to different one or aftermarket. Or a EBL ECM as I did for my F.I.

I was planning on tuning it just to get better performance and MPG out of the engine.

Then I would say if you want better mpg and performance then you will want to tune it no matter what. It's just a matter of what method you want to use to do so. I personally chose the EBL route as I stated. But there are other methods. All of which should be found in the stickies at the top of the thread list in this sub forum.

Re: Swap ECM or tune the devils away?
As nice as the EBL is, its cost out of my league for now.
For now I'll be using a Willem PROM programmer and the tuner software to make the bins.
I havent pulled the computer down yet, but I'm assuming to use a PDIP 29C256 flash memory EEPROM I'll need some sort of adaptor?

Re: Swap ECM or tune the devils away?
Does anyone have the stock bin for a '94 C/K TBI truck engine?
The stock bin repository at Moates seems to be down.
(Does asking for a stock bin count as prom begging?)

Re: Swap ECM or tune the devils away?
Asking for a stock BIN is OK and recommended. As it provides a good starting point. I'm not sure what I have for a '94 truck, but this BIN is for a '91 - '93 Caprice Police car.
MaskID is $62, note that it won't run in a '88 ECM (neither will the truck BIN). It is for the 16136965 ECM.
But can copy & paste parameters over to a '88 ECM BIN ('8063 ECM).

Re: Swap ECM or tune the devils away?
And I would assume to get the stock '88 305 bin I would just pull a read on my current chip.
Got it!
Now I'm off to order parts and jerry-rig up a G2 from an old zif socket and protoboard I have laying around.
