Moates Chip Extender

I bought this from Moates the other day.

https://shop.moates.net/products/chip-extender-1-0

Really neat. Since I essentially finished my calibration finally, I figured id run something more permanent than my Ostrich II. Though at the same time be more convenient to access than the chip inside the ECM.

Although not shown in the picture, it comes in the same housing as the Ostrich II and uses the same ribbon cable interface. So you can basically unplug this and plug the Ostrich back in without having to touch the ECM.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

Thanks for posting this.
I was concerned about the "long term" with the Ostrich and the battery dying.
The computer has been R&R'd so many times the mounting hardware and attachment points are getting worn out.
Now it'll be easy to replace the Ostrich with a chip without removing the computer.

Very glad Moates is back in business!

Re: Moates Chip Extender

The only caveat is that you can't program the chip while its in the unit due to the signal boosting circuits on the PCB. You have to remove the chip.

Minor inconvenience... since in theory the tune should be done before you "commit" to the final chip anyway.

Yeah, I'm glad as well. And true to form (as before), Craig responds really quickly to email questions... one of those few companies these days where you have 100% confidence in spending your money there.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

Just curious what does the case look like ? Does it have an opening in the top to access the dip ? I might have to bug Craig for a couple cases for mine that don’t have a case.

its the Ostrich Ii case. I mount mine with velcro to the top of the glove box. Just have to reach up and pull it down.

No access panel, but that's a good idea.

Thanks Mike, probably wouldn’t be to hard to cut the top and put in a zif.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

FYI, I just received mine and NO case, NO cable. Board only. I don't see any other listing there that has the options. I don't even see the case only as an option. Had to buy a cable and am currently 3d modelling the case. Uncool considering it seems you got both case and cable.

Might shoot craig a message, I haven’t inquired about getting a case yet.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

Hmmm... this looks like my fault, not Craig's. Sorry guys...

I was explaining my goals to Craig over email about swapping back and forth between the Ostrich and this thing and he sent me case with it. I already had the cable.

I may have mistook that to mean that it actually came with a case, and then got on here and incorrectly advertised it.

Seems like a misunderstanding.... but Tuned is right... I would contact Craig about it. You can blame it on me... lol.

I asked him for better descriptions on his site in my order notes. I already modeled the case and am printing it now.

No big deal, just wanted others to know so they don't have to pay extra shipping and wait an extra week. I'm in no rush.

Outstanding customer service from Moates. Refunded me shipping and I didn’t ask for it nor expect it.

Damn, I wish you had that ready when I got mine. Craig sent me an Ostrich case and I modified it like Ultim8Z but used the tall ZIF.

How well is yours working? I'm running a 12" ribbon cable to my ECM and it will push the signal through with the emulator and it will push the signal with a booster if running a chip but it won't push the signal on it's own.

Mine seems to be running fine.

How hard would it be to make the top of the case a little taller? I'm having to run a signal booster with mine and it won't fit in Craigs Ostrich case sitting on top of the extender board. I can run the booster on the ECM side but with the same issue, can't get the access cover on.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

This chip extender already comes with a signal booster.

This is an active-circuitry remote chip mounting solution. All address and data information is boosted, allowing chips to be mounted several feet (2-3) away from the target device!

Uh yeah, it's supposed to but apparently the one I got doesn't work. I had the booster already for a remote chip mount that I tried to build myself but was never able to get it to work then Craig got back up and running so I bought his.

Only thing I can suggest then would be to contact Craig if yours doesn't work.

Yeah, I want to make sure first that it isn't an issue with the 7427. Supposedly the only ECM's that needed a booster were the earlier 7747's and that vintage of ECM's.

Re: Moates Chip Extender

The computer has been R&R'd so many times the mounting hardware and attachment points are getting worn out.
