Fxiing speedo in 87 IROC?

I am looking at an 87 IROC ot possibly purchase. The speedo does not work & neither do the gauge lights. The owner nor I know exactly what the problem is w/the speedo. How would I go about fixing it? What till I need & how much will it cost? & as for the gauge lights I assume just new bulbs. How hard are they going to be to do & what are the part#s for the bulbs & would pepboys carry those bulbs?

also, If none of the gauges work would that mean I'd have to replace the whole dash or just the gauge cluster or ???

thank you

Probably the speedo cable is broken or speedo gears stripped. The dash lights could be burnt out bulbs or the printed circuit in back of the cluster is broken.

Gauge fuse could be blown as well (labeled oddly enough... 'gauges' )

The speedo cable shouldn't be more the $15 I'd think (that's what it cost for my suburban I had). Cable & gear should both be available thru local auto part stores.

Unscrew cable from tail of trans, pop off the back of the speedo (a bit of a b*tch) and pull thru the firewall. goes in reverse of it's comming out.

The speedo cable is actually two pieces. they connect on the outside of the firewall. The one that goes into the firewall and connects to the speedo is a pain to replace, but the other half is pretty simple. there is a screw-on connection at the firewall and then one on the tranny. pull off one and spin it and see what happens. then try to spin the other one with an electric drill and see if the speedo moves or not. also just because it might move does not mean that the cable isn't bad. they can also become unwound inside and not be very acurate.
The dash lights are easy to. you have to disassemble the IP but it doesnt take long. Take off the cover in frnt of the guages with a couple screws. then there is a clear plastic cover held on by a few more screws, and presto. There they are.

I seriously doubt every bulb in the gauge cluster is burnt out. Check the fuse, or even eaiser, turn the headlight **** counter-clockwise, that might be it. Would be funny if it was, but anyways.

Also check the speedo like the other guys said, there is no other way to explain it better.

Funny how you mention the headlight bulb ****, when I bought my 86 no dash lights worked at all. I came to find out that the light **** had certain points where the lights didnt work. I had to find the right point by turning it back and forth before they started working.
