does your rear hatch pull down work right ??

check the pull down motor and see if it jammed or stuck, our cars are famous for doing this. if it is messed up then it will continue to pull power and drain your battery, this system works with or without the key on. try removing the rear cargo trim piece and disconnecting the motor from the harness, recharge the battery and let it sit a few days to see if the battery still drains. if so then this is more that likely the problem.

ARE YOU SURE ???

it is my understanding that ALL third gens have them.

you may want to actually remove the trim panel and check, I'm assuming that you have not already done so. I never thought my car had one because it was already messed up when I bought the car, it wasn't until I had the same problem that I found out it did.

Not all third gen had the pull down hatch, I have had them both ways. When this usually happens to me its because I have bumped the stupid trunk light switch and left it on.

Here is one way to help locate what is draining your battery. Disconnect the positive battery cable and hook a test light between the battery terminal and the battery cable. If there is no draw anywhere in the car the test light should not light. if the test light lights up there is something in the car drawing current and that is what is draining your battery. (note: disconnect hood light, it will light test light up cause it is on (drawing current)).

If test light lights, here is a start to finding your drain. (disconnect dome light, cause you will have door open) and start pulling fuses one by one till the test light between battery terminal and cable goes out. When you pull the fuse and the light goes out you have at least narrowed it down to which cicuit has the drainage to the battery.

Another possibility if you don't know your altenator is charging (check volt gage if you have one), you could be driving on the battery till it runs out of juice.

Hope this helps

Bruce

Are you sure it is charging. If it is not the hatch causing the problem and the charging is OK, the you will have to get a voltmeter with a current meter in it, or a standalone unit. With the car off, just like it is sitting overnight disconnect one of the battery cables and insert the ammeter in SERIES with the battery lead. Look for an indication of current flow, anything more than a few milliamps indicates a problem. There will some current from the radio memory and the ECM memory but I don't think it is more than a half amp. If you see a draw of several amps or more start unplugging fuses and look for a change. When the excessive draw goes away you will know what circuit is most likely at fault. Don't overlook a leaky rectifier in the alternator.
