Voltage needle jumps when turn signals are on
Voltage needle jumps when turn signals are on
The problem is every time I turn on my turn signals,my voltage jumps back and forth.
I think the tach does to,but can't remember.
Shortly after I noticed this my alternator
died.So to be safe I replaced the battery
to.Still did'nt fix the problem.It's a 89
TA tpi 350 with 55,000 miles if that helps.
Any ideas?????? thanks.

It's notmal for the voltage meter needle to deflect, slightly, when the turn signal bulbs turn on in a flash cycle, however, if the tach needle is deflecting in sync with the turn signal flash rate, the system voltage is too low.

It's normal for the voltage needle to twitch along with the blinkers. But the only time I've seen the rest of my gages fluctuate with the blinkers was when my alternator died. I suppose it's possible that you got a bad alternator. Did you buy a reman? Those things are notorious for not working. If I were you, I'd check to make sure the alternator was charging. If it is, then just drive around and see if you're having any other problems. But I suppose it's hard to get anywhere in this snow. (I'm only a few miles away in Lawrence)

If the problem occurs only at idle, then it's probably the alternator, or a weak battery, or both.
Also, when you wash your engine, make sure that you cover the alternator so that it does not get wet. I killed a few alternators, that way....

The reason your tach may be dropping is that some ecms will adjust the pulse rate for certain engines when the voltage drops below a certain value. This is to compensate for the injectors not having the same current as when it is fully charged (14.4 volts). So your engine may infact have its rpms varying slightly due to the injectors firing differently between when you are at 14.4 volts and less than 14.4 volts.
I don't have the 6E.tdf, so I cannot confirm if the 165 ecm does do this. It does on the 730 ecm for SD TPI cars.
