speedometer
speedometer
I have an 84 Berlinetta with the digital dash. The whole dash is screwed up pretty bad anyway, but the biggest hassle is the speedometer. It just sits at 0 no matter how fast I am going. My friend who I bought it from got the tires spinning on ice before he sold it to me, and said that is when it died. He said it only got to 60 or so, then it just quit. What is going on with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be the VSS at the transmission, the VSS buffer, (yellow box under the driver's side kick panel), the cluster, or the connection between any of the three components. If it went bad with the tires spinning, I'd check the VSS & its drive & driven gears at the transmission, first.

'90 & later & pre '90 F-bodies with a digital dash have the VSS at the transmission. The V6 & V8 VSS units are the same. The driven gear may be different from another unit, but they are easily interchanged - unless the driven gear on your unit is broken, in which case that is all you would need to buy. Pull the VSS & inspect the drive & driven gears, plug & wiring before buying anything.
