Distributor ?'s
I'm currently modifying my engine and I need some advice.
I have an '87 LG4 and I'm junkin everything on the top end of my engine and putting in the following: Iron vortec heads, Edelbrock preformer RPM intake,700 CFM carter carb, heddman shorty headers with matching Y-pipe,Hooker cat back, Self aligning roller rockers, and so on.
I need help picking an ignition setup and money isn't a problem,
First I need to find a distributor, and it has to bypass all ECM or engine computer crap so what distributor typre should I get,Vaccum advance or mechanical.
I'll also consider an electronic ignition.
My car will also be lacking all emmisions equipment.
I need reliability and power from this sucker so please any input is much welcomed.

Ya no points for me.
As for igniton and everything else I'm going to be bypassing all emmissions equipment and eliminating alot of the sensor and the wires whith them.
I'm gonna probably go electic ignition.

Then do it right, Get an entire MSD ignition setup. get a chevy pro-billet distributor, an MSD 6AL ignition, and a blaster2 coil. the pro-billet is mechanical advance, so you set what RPM you want the advance to come in at using a few little springs, and the MSD ignition box will make sure your plugs stay nice and fresh and you will even see a MPG improvment because of it.
I have never seen a better setup, its what I use, my friends use, and everyone I know with a nice engine setup has. Im sure nearly everyone on thirdgen will agree too. Yes, there are other hot ignition setups, but none so proven as the MSD... or easy to hook up. 2 wires to the coil, 2 wires to the battery, and the distributor plugs right into the MSD box. so simple, so good.

If you haven't already bought the MSD stuff, and you want to save a little money, you could buy a used stock HEI, and treat it to a brand-name conversion package. Pertronix sells an upgrade kit with all sorts of goodies to make your stock HEI like the distributor they sell, for a little over $119. It includes everything like a coil, module, vac. advance canister, springs, cap, rotor, and some wiring. It's called the Flamethrower HEI tune-up.
It'll work well with your carbed setup, you'll save a little $$$, and you can't beat 50,000 volts.
I'm in the middle of the same project you're doing, except with an L03. Everything that's not considered bottom-end is getting tossed for an old school carb setup.

Could you guys give me a hand. This may be the "bonehead of the month award", but I need some help. I'm doin head gaskets, rebuilt head, and headers, so: My buddy came over and took my distributor out one day before I got home from work. He came back last night to help me put it back in, and could not remember how it should go back in. He didn't make any marks on the distributor so we don't know how to put it back in. I have the #1 piston at tdc, but I guess I need to figure out where the rotor should be pointing to fire the #1 cylinder. Needless to say, this buddy didn't get any free beer last night. Anyone who can help me can have his beer though!!! Thank you.

The rotor can point wherever it wants, as long as the #1 wire is running to where it points.
