Okay to wire Amp and Head Unit to same Ignition Wire?

Hello,
I have just installed a Pioneer Head Unit into my 1992 Camaro RS. Upon installing it, I decided to purchase a 150 watt amplifier for a bass tube to go in the back. I bought a wiring kit for the amplifier and ran a wire off of the ignition switched power current designed for the stereo only. This would be the stereo turn on wire, but anyway I kinda split the wire into two ways so I can run my stereo and amp only when the ignition is on. Is this okay or should I find another Ignition Plug in the dash somewhere? If so tell me where

are you powering your amp through this wire? if so, you should disconnect it and power the amp off the battery itself with an inline fuse. best buy installed my first system tapping into one of the wires instead of running it straight off the battery. soon after that, my check engine light stayed on and my car kept on stalling. here, they killed my computer. so they had to reemburse me over $400 to get a new computer and the labor.

there is a remote wire that came with your amp kit. this is what turns the amp on when you turn the the key to the on position. its hooked up to your radio so when you turn your radio on, the amp comes on as well. it's usually a light blue color. if you have your radio hooked up to the ign wire, then you should have no prob hooking the remote wire up to the radio. hope you know what i mean.

Thanks Camaro 22,
I guess I will just have to rip up the dash again to hook it to the remote. My only concern was whether or not the stock ignition wire could handle a total of 500 watts give or take. I didn't wanna mess around with it, but there is a blue remote wire on the head unit, I was just afraid to use it because I thought it would only work for antennas or for other things. Thanks, write back if you think I should rip it up.(P.S., it already is ripped up cause I blew a fuse.)

That blue wire is usually used for pwr atennas too. That's the wire I've always used to run my amps. It's keyed pwr.

Thanks alot, I am just wondering because I have already dismantled my dash to find out what I should do. One time I ran a wire into the remote input on my amplifier that came from the radio turn on. That resulted in no need for a ground directly to the battery. When I use the remote from the stereo, I have to use the ground to the negative battery. Is this good?

I hope this helps man....it was quick but hopefully effective...pioneer head units power wire is orange as are a lot of others. but once in awhile they will be red. the best bet is to get a multimeter and check each wire to make sure they are correct, but since you have your headunit already installed, im not worried about...

That factory radio wire is meant to power a car radio...nothing more. It is something like 16-gauge wire, with a 10-amp fuse. Your amp wiring kit is probably 8-gauge or larger, with a 40-amp or larger fuse.

Here's how you hook up that amp kit.

The main power wire: Goes from the battery all the way to the amp. The inline fuse holder goes under the hood, as close to the battery as possible.

The thin blue remote wire: that goes from the blue wire coming from your radio, to the "remote" input on the amp. (If your radio has two blue wires coming from it, use the one that has the white stripe.)

Grounding: Hook up the ground wire to a clean, solid metal part, as close to the amp as possible.

Now, the amp will never drain your battery, and it will only turn on when the radio's on.

Thanks alot dude. There is one other problem that I have though. When I rig up my testing amp as I call it (since I got ripped off at a sale and only half of it works and it is terrible) to my remote on stereo, when I do that I must hook up the ground on the amp to the negative on the battery, but when I use the stereo ignition wire that comes out of the dash, I only have to hook up the ground to something metal. What does this mean?

hey toughguy, just use the diagram above....its that simple....print it out and use it..i dont really understand that last post you made. always ground the amp to a baremetal spot anywhere on your chassis. and also the ground wire has to be at least as big as your power wire. the only thing besides a rca cable that you have to worry about from your headunit is the blue remote wire. the blue remote wire connects to the remote plug on the amp. the only thing you have to worry about is simply, make sure thier is a good ground going from the negitive post on your battery to bare metal anywhere under the hood. the stock location is sufficient. once again make sure that wire is big enough(I am sure it is) and make sure your amp is grounded also to bare metal. that is all you have to worry about grounding. DO NOT CONNECT THE AMP GROUND WIRE TO YOUR BATTERY GROUND! its not safe, but more importantly, you will pick up alot of isolated noise. I edited the above picture.....just use it...its pretty simple

and by the way, on our cars, I would run new power and ground wires just to make sure they are reliable. this will clear up any problems you may have now, or in the future.
