starter cranks slow, why?

Just put in a 87 305 4 barrel motor out of a firebird formula in place of the v-6 in my 82 camaro. When I go to start the car it cranks over very slow and almost won't start, this is embarrasing. I have shimmed it and the whole works. The starter is brand new, I just bought it. Could it be that the engine isn't grounded good enough or maybe the battery isn't big enough. The battery is only about 6 months old, but is for the v-6. I noticed the exhaust y-pipe is fairly close to the starter, could that be it? Should I get a heat shield? Sometimes it cranks over like it should (very rare) but mainly it is very slow. Should I get bigger ground straps for the engine? can anyone help me?

Probobly nothing electrical at all, check ur timing, it might be advanced, my 305 cranks slow and sounds like a dead battery almost if I try driving it after a long drive or a hard drive

If it is overadvanced wouldn't it "diesel" after I shut it off? It doesn't do that.

Not sure, Mine is fuel injected...my old bird "dieseled" but started easy, maybe it is just slightly advanced...not enough to "diesel" it but enough to make it hard to crank....post a link to this post in the Tech/General board and see what others think..sorry

Stupid question did u buy a starter for a 305 or a V6? the battery should be a m75, thats pretty much universal for GM cars!!!!Try hookin a battery charger on to it, then start it, does it turn faster? if so u might want to get a bigger battery!!!!

Hey 86FYRbird, you were right, the timing was off. I got it straightened out and now it starts like it should. I knew that little battery should have turned it over correctly. Thanks a lot man!
