I think i killed my coolant fan motor, how can i tell for sure????

when i first got my car, the guy had a power wire hooked up straight to the battery so everytime i was to drive, i had to hook it up to the battery, and disconnect it when not driving. i got real tired of this, and took it to a radiator shop, and he said the cheapest and fastest way to get around this was to ground the green wire that goes to the relay itself, so that the fan would come on when the car came on, (running constantly) and off when the car is off. now while driving home, i smelled antifreeze, and looked at my gauge and noticed that i was overheating. and shortly after that, started smoking. the fan doesn't work anymore. i put a new relay on, nothing, i hooked it up like it was before straight to the battery, nothing. did i kill the fan motor? how can i fix this or replace this? please i need help bad. i can't drive my car if i'm overheating. please help. thank you.

A simple test to see if the motor is getting power is to jump the A-B terminals of the diagnostic connector. This overrides the system and automatically starts the fan. You will be able to hear the fan run. Do NOT start the car with the jumper installed.

It sounds like you have tried to run power to it directly. You may want to try hopping power right from the batt.(its risky and be ready to pull the wire off very quickly) But if the fan will not spin by hand the motor is seized.

black zee, what a-b thing are you talking about to override the system? the pin thing under the dash, like how you would get codes from? i did try to run it straight to the battery already. that's how the guy who had it before me hooked it up originally, and i tried that way again, and i didn't work. it spins freely with ease by hand. anymore suggestions or ideas just to get the fan to work again even if it is ghetto for now, at least i can drive it somewhere for someone to look at it?. thanks guys.

well here you go. Get an inline fuse holder off a power wire from the battery. Take that wire to a generic relay(8 bucks Camaro fan relay will work fine). Take a wire from the "activate" prong of the relay to a toggle switch, and from the open side of the toggle back to the relay. Run a output wire from the relay to the fan. Then whammo you have a safe fused power supply and can run the fan at will.

That will work but if he already ran it directly to the battery and it doesn't come on I'd have to say that its D-E-A-D. It's boneyard time my friend.

Your fan motor is fried. You can get a new one at any auto parts store for around $30.

Mine went out not to long ago, and it too smoked. The smoke is a result from the motor burning up.

If you connected it to the battery, and it didn't turn on, that's all the troubleshooting you need to do. Just get a new one ..... they are very easy to install (30min - 1hr)
