What to do about mickey mouse wiring job?

After looking my new car over real close I release that the bozo who owned it before me did a mickey mouse wiring job. I had to fix a few things, but everything else is running alright. I'm wondering if I should just go hrough and redo everything capt planet did and put it back stock or leave it. I dunno.

I feel your pain about the wiring job-my 84 TA was horribly hacked. My reccomendation would be to rewire whatever is hacked up. My 84 was carbureted so it will obviously be different on a fuel injected engine, but if you take your time, it really isn't too horrendous. Plus, with the hacked up wires, its real hard to pinpoint problems in the system.

OK, well I have some serious electrical problems with my '83 TA. The original motor was replaced with a 350. It is still carburated. My signals and tail lights are messed up. All the taillights work. I know this because when I set my alarm my whole taillight panel...including the reverse lights light up bright. When I press the brake the right side only comes on. When I put my hazards on only my left front and right back work. When I put my right signal on only the front right works...not the back and totally opposite when i signal left. How much is it going to cost to fix this? Is it worth just buying another car? Let me know. I have a chance to buy an '89 GTA 5.7 350 w/t-tops for $2000. Should I sell mine and buy the GTA instead? I love my car...plus it is only my first car. I never even got to drive it on my own. I am just pouring soo much money into it, and do not want to waste my time and money if the electrical is going to be that bad.

Man I know how it feels.I bought my 85 Firebird S/E for 1000 dollars in November and I love the car to death. It came with a 305 but the previous owner put a 350 in it.I have put a new exhaust on it and some new tires and some other stuff but the next thing I want to get fixed is the electrical problems.First whenever the lights are off and I try to use the blinkers both sides will blink on the front and the back and also whenever the lights are off and I hit the brakes the dash lights come on.Whenever the lights are on and I try to use the blinkers it will blink once and stop.I am hoping that it wont cost that much to fix considering I poured 700 dollars into it for tires and exhaust.I have thought about selling it but I love the car and just wouldnt have the heart to do it.

I don't seem to have to many electrial problems. The guy new enough to fix it. Its just he did it messy and moved things around and I've got wires hanging across my engine and ****. He moved the junction box to the front of the car. I guess I'll juss take my time and redo it all and put it back in its proper place. Thanx

It is very wierd with my car. Everything else in the car works, besides my tail lights and blinkers. They all work, as I said before, but not at the rigth time. The reverse lights are the only ones that work at the right time. I love my car as well, it is actually my first car. I need to fix this problem before I get it on the road. I bought so much for it so I can fix it up, but I dont know how much the electrical is going to cost. It already doesnt pass inspection due to the previous owner removing the cat. Is it better off looking for another car? Where would I bring my car to be fixed, and how much should I expect to spend? My car is great...it is actually an '83....but looks like an '87. I have the GTA rims on it(which need to be repainted black)...and the gfx, nose, and bumper from an '87. I also just put in mint black plastic interior pieces from a '91 TA. All I need is to find a set of GTA seats...or 4th gen...and get a new headliner. I have the t-top weather stripping. Am I better off just selling my car for like $1500? It only has 86,360 miles on it. The engine...as I was told is a 350 4 bolt main...i really dont care if it is a 4 bolt or not. I have an eldebrock manifold and holley carburator...along with some other parts. The person I bought it from said it had a shift kit in it as well. It is a quick car, but I just dont want to have to go through all the trouble with inspection here in NY. Do you think that $1500 is a fair price? There is an '89 GTA around by me with 112,000 miles on it for $2400. It needs to be repainted...otherwise it is mint. Should I go for the GTA? Sorry for the long post...it is just that I am so confused and have no idea what I should do.

Just log on to like Car-part.com and enter the proper info, and then search for a wiring harness. The results will come up and you'll have your choice between an engine harness, dash harness, headlight harness or body harness. You can probably figure out which one you need. If not, e-mail one of the places that sell them to find out what each one entails. When you actually go to rewire, just label EVERYTHING and do one connection at a time. If you need to, you can rewire the whole car and a complete harness usually runs about $200-$300. The individual ones are considerably less. I hope this helps you guys out.

Hey, always check your grounds. That's the biggest problem, especially on the older F-bodies. Metal rusts, bolts vibrate loose, and wires break. If you have bad problems like that...ALWAYS check all your grounds.
Here's my last electrical nightmare.
The guy I bought my car from swapped out the tranny and the engine, went from a 305 l69 to an old 350. He never took out the comp, and left all the wiring for the old fuel injection all over the engine. I don't have a single sensor on the car.
Anyway, as of now, when I start my car, I have to pull a little switch to get it charging, and when I turn the car off, I have a good 5 secs that my car still runs. My cooling fan is creating enough current to run my engine. Fun stuff huh?
