Radiator Fan Just Carrys On Cooling!

Hi Guys,

My Tpi Rad Fan (Single Fan) cuts in around 220 according to the gauge in the car, which I guess is ok?

The fan usually stops running when it reaches 180 maybe, certainly below the 220 line on the gauge temp anyway.

However, the fan now continues to run instead of cutting out at the usual temp.

I guess the battery will take a beating if this carrys on?

Has my relay gone on vacation?

My CTS is new.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks

What year? Camaro or FB?

If the fan turns off when the ignition is turned off, then the relay is probably not the problem.

There may be a fan pressure switch on the A/C liquid line (dk gn / wht & blk wires) - there is in the '85 VIN F system - that may be defective. I don't know if it is a normally closed or normally open switch, but you may want to remove the plug to open the circuit, & also try shorting the two wires together & see if that makes the fan turn off after waiting for some period of time, as there may be a delay in changing fan state, as well.

Thanks Tim,

My Aircon System is not working (yet) I suspect that the gas as escaped due to leakage over the 4 years that the car as been laid up.

(The joys of de-bugging a Tpi - lol)

Will this make any difference to my problem do you think?

Thanks for any further info.

I don't know how relevant this might be. On my 88 IROC which was originally a 305 TPI there was a temperature sensor towards the rear of the block on the passenger side. This was called the "heavy duty coolant fan switch". The heat from the original exhaust manifold had trashed the connector and the wire burned off. This had the fan on all the time (but it went off with the ignition). When I repaired the connection, the fan worked as advertised.

Thanks to everybody who has replied to my original post.

I have now sorted the problem out with my fan.

Turns out that the CTS sensor was bad (It was brand new GM as well!!)

Anyway, put another new one in and everything is back to normal.

Thanks for all the input guys.
