I just installed a PowerMaster 140 amp alternator in my 91 RS. I got it from summitracing.com.

I installed this alternator because I had a massive power drain when operating my rear defroster, stereo, heater, wipers and headlights (H4). I tested the alternator output even whith all these accessories running and it stays steady at 14.7 volts. One other thing I noticed is that my idle feels more stable too. Everything worked great.

www.alternatorparts.com. They are selling new GM 140 amp units that came with the BC4 package for under $200.

hey Danno I purchased the iceburg up grade for my alternator I hope it helps with my idle issues. The car runs like cr@p now I think its from the drain on the battery. By the way isnt it true that that once the car is running the engine draws its power mainly from the alternator?

Think of the alt as piggybacked to the battery. The battery is the heart of the system, that's why it is so important to start with a fully charged batt. The alt maintains the battery at a level of charge as electrical demands vary in the vehicle. The vehicle does not run from the alt per se, the alt simply replaces capacity to the batt. I have done several iceberg kits, it's kind of early to know whether or not they prolong the life of the rear bearing or not. Considering what a GM reman unit sell for I believe it is very cost effective to do your own rebuilds.

There's a little company in Flint, Michigan that sells them. I think their name is "General Motors", or something like that. One of their sidelines is alternators. I've got a couple of them, and they work just like the originals.

HINT: If you have an audio amp with a high peak output, a large capacitor may solve many of your problems. I've seen a one Farad (friggin' huge) installed on even smaller ŕcers that solves many peak power problems.
