99 interior to 86 bird-need serious help w/wiring probs.

Finally got eveything fitted, now I'm to the wiring stage and am not having much luck. The interior is out of a 99 Firebird and I installed it into a 86 Firebird. I looked through all the search topics, but could'nt find the answers I needed. Using the new (99) electric window switches I got the drivers side to work-ONLY. I wired everything thing up per cross-over in the Hayes & Chiltons manuals and still only the drivers side works. It's as though the pass. side is kinda of like a 3 way switch in your home and the drivers side pass. side control is like a 2 way switch-I just can't get the 2 to come together. It's probably something stupid that 4 of us could'nt figure out or overlooked (I hope)
Next and hopefully final electrical mess-I briefly tried to hook up the new (99) headlight switch and was unsuccessful at that as well. Been up since 4am plowing so that does'nt help. Anyway on the 86 there is only 5 if I remember right wires that go to the actual headlight/park light switch. The new (99) has many. I could'nt get the paarking lights to work when the switch was in the parking light position and the headlights would not flip up either. Basically we spend all afternoon scratchin our heads, burnin our fingers, and finally calling it a day as we're all frazeld. Any help with a more through wiring schematic and/or somebody that been here and done that, please chime in. ALL help is appreciated. After this gets figured out it should all be down hill, but this is by far my biggest hill to date-never had much luck with this kinda stuff.

I haven't any clue on how to help you, sorry! But I had to ask, do you have any pics of this? It sounds pretty cool!

All wiring is done, just got the 3 step/line locks, and the misc. stuff under the hood to shore up electrically. If ya go to the body/interior forum and look for the post "Few more pics of 4th gen swap" I posted some pics there, last time I looked it was waay at the bottom of the page.

The headlight switch will have a few extra terminals on it for backlighting at night and for the daytime running light (DRL) stuff.

As you already noticed, the power window control wires for the passenger side end under the center console, so you'll have to run some new wire from the console to inside the drivers door. The 4thgen passenger door motor switch will have 5 wires on it. Two come from the drivers door switch and will show ground at rest, two connect to the motor inside the door, and the 5th wire is a switched +12V source. When you press the passenger switch, one of the output wires will go to +12V but the other will stay grounded.

We tried that method, because like the above schematic, that's the way it "should work" After 2 days of every possible combination and lots of burnt fingers, we just gave up and settled upon the fact it can only be run from the drivers side. The pass. side switch is not internally wired for the needed operation of the older harness.

The problem that you're likely encountering is that the 4thgen switch socket has two brown wires, each with it's own unique purpose.

Cut the two wires that run into the passengers side motor. The two wires coming from the dash side of the car will connect to the light blue & tan wires of the 4th gen switch socket. The two wires running directly into the motor will connect to the dark blue & brown wires of the 4thgen switch socket. Now turn the ignition switch on and try to move the passenger side window from the drivers switch. If it moves. you've got the right brown wire connected to the motor. If it does not move, disconnect the brown wire and connect the other one to the motor. For testing purposes, get +12V for the passenger switch directly from the positive terminal of the battery.

So basically there will be-can't remember now, it's been awhile- 1 or 2 wires coming off the 4th gen window switch that will not be used then if I read your post correctly? We originally cut the 2 wires in the car about 6" before they run into the boot to the power window motor, tapped them into the light blue and tan wires running from the switch, then ran 2 wires from the switch to the motor in the door itself. When the wrong combo of wires were connected the driver side switch would get hot in a hurry. I'm going to print this out and when I get back to the piddly stuff, I'll re-try hooking it up as you have described. I truely appreciate the research you put into this and hopefully in the near future I'll get back to ya with a ALL works like it should post.

Re: 99 interior to 86 bird-need serious help w/wiring probs.

Back from the dead ... as opposed to starting a new thread.

I'm dong the same swap in my 91 Z. Have everything figured out except the Pass Window Switch wiring. I have wired it according the my service manual for my 91, and the schematic found here ...

http://shbox.com/1/pwr_window_schematic.jpg

The motor works fine up and down from the driver's door switch. But on the pass switch, only "Up" works, when you hit down, it draws a ton of power and all the interior lights dim way down. Any ideas?
