Is there another way to detect ping?

Check my sig for engine specs. I'm using the knock sensor suggested for the 383 swap. I believe it was origionally intended for the ZZ3 engine. Anyways, it doesn't matter where I have my base timing at, 15 degrees retarded to 15 degrees advance, I keep getting the same knock counts on winaldl in the same places at higher MAP readings and rpms. I'm ran a dummy knock sensor, and didn't hear anything pinging, but I don't feel safe doing this. But it really wakes up the engine and will definetely get me past my weak 98.4 mph pass. Any suggestions? Is there another way I can check for knock other than with the knock sensor?

Oh, and the chip is custom burned, but pre winaldl data

Knock sensors

I am sorry that I don't have an answer for your question, but where did you get the "Dummy Knock Sensors"? I would like to try that in by build up so that I can use my gear drive.

Well, I did it the most simple way I knew. Simply bought an extra knock sensor that I left off the engine and plugged the harness into it.

Dummy Knock Sensor

That is exactly what I had planned on doing. Did you connect the threads on the knock senser to ground?

This ran well for you? You see I have a gear drive in the 355 I am installing into my T/A and I can't run it with the knock sensers, so I need to disable them. I have a doc. you might be interested in to reduce the sensitivity of a knock senser.

Thanx for the input!

Well, it helped me out because the knock sensor in the block is detecting false ping, thus causing my ecm to retard the timing. So the dummy sensor eliminated any knock counts. However, I think I'm actually getting ping at rpms past 5,000, so it has really become a pain. The timing charts in the chip will need to be changed, but it is next to impossible to know for sure as to what exactly to set them too without actually having true knock counts.

I did not ground the sensor, I didn't even think about it actually. I just set it on the k-member. The ecm hasn't thrown any codes, but I think grounding it is actually a good idea. I will have to do that tommarrow. Only thing is, I recall that the ecm actually tries to force knock at some point for some reason.....I don't know. Hopefully I can find a knock sensor that works. I'm not looking forward to draining the coolent again

Try installing the sensor with teflon tape on the threads and don't tighten it down to the specified torque. This will "insulate" the sensor and make it a little less sensitive, play around with how tight to have it to detect the pings you know are there and eliminate the false knocks.

Could running lean cause knock? I'm talking about blms in the 140 range. I just found out the fuel pump cannot handle the psi I need to be running when under load. It is getting replaced with a walbro 255 to fix the problem, but not until the engine is looked at(leaking oil, thank goodness for warrentees).

Most assuredly. Running lean is what causes detonation.

sweet, that is good to hear, well in a way. At least I won't need to worry about the knock problem anymore. Thank you
