VSS help

I'm wanting to put a 91 camaro gauge cluster in my 85z so I need to know what the wires from the VSS in the tranny goto the speedo....I do not have a ECM anymore so I don't need to worry about that. Can I hook the VSS up right to the speedo? The VSS I have is from a 91 firebird and it has 2 wires comming off of it what one dose what?

Thanks!

Ill try to answer this best I can since I have been trying to understand the ecm functions as well and someone else can offer more info. The purple and yellow wire from the vss is the vss high and low to the ecm and the wires are alternatable since polarity doesnt matter. The density vss puts out a raw signal. You are lacking the buffer from the ecm. I dont know what would happen if you hooked the vss directly, could possibly cause damage or not work.

You could try a VSS speed buffer module that was used on the 1986 to 1992 4 cyl. and 6 cyl. Firebirds and other GM makes such as the mid 80's mid size Delta 88 and similar. The speed buffer is usually mounted behind the glove box on the passenger side.

I can e-mail you a wireing diagram for the buffer to work.

You got mail. This is just an idea I brainstormed and I have never tried it but it may work. Like I said I dont know how the speedo would respond to a raw signal from the vss so this buffer may work for you.

Well the VSS like I said is from a 91 firebird TBI soo I guess if it was 4000ppm then it should work without the buffer box that is if the gauge cluster from a 92 camaro also runs 4000ppm. From what I understand is that the buffer box is for knocking down the ppm for the cruise and ecm......I don't have eather. I don't know if I am on the right track here or not.........Thanks for all the help so far shaggy56!!! :hail:

Dakota Digital makes a universal speedo adaptor that will work - VSS input & cruise & speedo output - also may be calibrated for any rear end ratio / trans speedo drive / driven gear combinations.

Go to http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail....rtNumber=SGI-5

I was just looking at that But I would like to if I can......Do it for cheeper if I can that is........This is what I so far understand.... The VSS has 2 wires comming from it now according to Dakota Digital they say if nothing else is connected to the VSS then one wire goes to ground and the other would be the signal....Soo what I am looking for I guess would be would the signal out of the VSS be ppm's and if soo then it should hook right up to the speedo right?

Yeah thats how i understand it ground and signal. I dont think it matters which one you hook up either way since polarity is not affected. I ordered a aftermarket vss and it says this in the instructions. Should be the same for the firebird vss but you should be able to work that out.

Connecting the VSS directly to the speedo will not work. At minimum, you will need a GM VSS buffer module, used in the digital dash & TBI cars, as mentioned above.

So what you are saying is that if I get a VSS buffer module from a TBI car then I should be ok?......dose the 90-92 camaro speedo run on the same ppm whether it is TPI or TBI?
