during engine swap.

Currently I am about to put my transmission back onto my engine, but in the proccess of my swap I disconnected everything that was ever attatched to my engine.

when I reconnected the battery to test the starter with the flywheel, it wouldn't crank, I know its a good starter battery engine and everything, but then I realized i had no power to anything.

only thing that has a connection is the starter, then I noticed the positive terminal goes right into the alternator.

ok so heres the question.

do I need to have the alternator hooked up and ready to go to have power anywhere else in the car or did I F.... something up?

You do not need to have the alternator connected to check the starter. You just can't run the motor for that long or you will kill the battery.
As far as having no power. Obviously check to make sure you have a good ground for the battery. If you have it grounded to anything with paint on it, then scrape the paint away from where it is bolted to. If none of that works, then get a test light and go silly checking wires.

bleh, I was trying to read my haynes manual but could not figure out the wiring diagram for where the lowest gauge cable coming out of the positive terminal goes(biggest size lowest gauge). Its not going into anything and doesn't look like it is supposed to go to far. Only thing that is connected is the starter, and the alternator, those are the 3 that come out of the battery.

Does anyone wanna go look and tell me? heh

I'd double check the ground wire also. If you don't have power to the ignition that won't let you turn the starter over. If you have an auto there is a yellow wire from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch and then a purple wire from that to the starter switch pole.

Here's a starter wiring diagram for you: http://www.3gc.net/misc/starter-diagram.jpg

If you don't have power going to the ignition and you want to check the starter, use something to jump power from the constant 12v source to the switch pole (where the small purple wire is connected.) Make sure the car is secure on the jackstands though, incase for some reason it starts or something.

ok. i have finally figured it all out now. positive lead goes to alternator AND starter. starter also has another RED wire that goes with the wire from the battery, on the BIG post. so you have TWO wires on the BIG post. then, the "S" terminal. the small terminal on the starter that is closest to the engine block. that should have a purple wire attached to it. then make sure your negative wire from the battery is grounded. that will provide power to all the goodies! only took me about 3 hrs to figure that all out. but now i know, so i guess it really was a good experience. any q's, contact me. e-mail's the best way:

hahah, thanks

I found some random wires that I should probabbly hook up to the right place sometime lol thank you for your help I will hook that up tomorrow.

I put the tranny in, connected the drive shaft, installed most of the carb connections, I have to get the correct ignition coil, and install It, then I hopefully can drive my beast away.

Is it ok for me to just plug my EGR valve or do I need to connect that?

ditto. unless of course you're planning on smogging the car soon. I smogged mine just before the motor blew up and i did the swap to my 350 (it ran yesturday for the first time by the way), so i'm good for two years now!! YAH!!! :lala:
