What is this ???????

Hello,

I need to identify this item in my engine bay. It is located on a wire near my battery. When I open it, it has a thin metal spike in it. I have never seen this in any car! My car is a non starter with the fuel pump not priming and my local garages get scared when you tell them it is an American car.
There is no fuse that I can see for the fuel pump in the fuse block either?

Many thanks in advance.

Steve

if the fuel pump doesnt prime. you should get the fuel pump to activate after cranking the engine maybe 6-8 times until oil pressure builds up. the fuel pump relay is on the drivers side against the firewall. check the connections and maybe replace the relay.

Cranking it does not make it start :-(
This all started when I tried to jumpstart it. All of a sudden white smoke started to come from the back of the engine bay in the middle by the ( I believe ) dist. cap?

This stopped when the battery jump leads got taken off.
The car does start when I spray easy start into the injector ports and stops when that is used up.

As far as I know, my fuses are all okay.

I wish I knew what that thing is in my picture!

Again, many many thanks!

Steve

the connector in the pic looks like the power feed to the computer, at least it looks exactly like the one in my car.

I think that is the power wire to the ecm. Check to see if you can turn your fuel pump on with the aldl port, i believe you apply 12 volts to terminal G but you should double check with a search on the board. Also check to see if your getting an injector pulse. If not check to see that the computer is gettin 12volts. If it's not look for a fuse in a capsule and check that.

Matrixra- That looks like a fuse holder. You say there was a metal spike in it? Not a fuse w/ glass and metal on the ends? Could it be possible that the fuse blew and some one put a piece of metal to jumper it? If so, there is a short somewhere that would make the fuse blow.
The white smoke by the distrubutor- what does it smell like? Burning oil- gas? or acrid electrical smell? If its the latter smell, I would guess the solid fuse (if thats what is in your fuse holder) is letting enough amperage thru to fry the guts of the distributor.
Get a new fuse. If it blows right away there is a short somewhere. If it is the power feed to the ECM, post a message about it on the ECM board. They might have some more info. Hope to have been of help!
