alarm ideas......

in light of a friend's 1989 iroc being stolen last week, i've decided to look into building an alarm system.

i want lights inside the car to blind whoever attempts to steal the car. i also want a loud, painful siren, or other noisemaker. i'd like to tie it in with a time delay to give you time to disarm it by hitting a hidden switch.

i'm thinking of using the halogen bulbs for the lighting... still thinking of other ideas. going to tie it in with a shock sensor that sets the alarm off as soon as the car shifts when someone sits in the seat.

ideas, or feedback?

I don't think you want to damage people.... that's not too cool.... I think a lawsuit could be possible

Now the shock sensor is a good idea. I'm not sure how you'd tell the difference from the driver of the car and a thief.

Maybe somehing as simple as an ignition kill somewhere would do the job.

i'm thinking just a siren that is painful... i'm not seeking permanent damage. i'd probably put a warning label on the door advising of the possibility of hearing damage if this car is broken into. i'm going to check with local authorities and my insurance company, but i don't think i could be sued if there was a warning posted.

kinda like if i grab one of those transformers at a power substation, my family can't sue the power company..

Instead of using halogen lamps, which would be bulky and heat up really fast, why not use some ultra high intensity LED's? At night they would be almost as effective, and they would make a much cleaner install. If you want it to be amazingly loud too, install a piezo under the driver's feet, passenger's feet, behind the radio, behind the rear glove box, and in the spare tire well. That combined with the light would make it just a little uncomfortable in the car I did an install of just two mini-sirens behind the dash vents in an s-10 blazer, and it was deafeningly loud

that's an even better idea. those led's are small as well, right? i'd love to hide one or two inside the center dash vents...

thanks a bunch binky you just gave me several ideas:yourock:

Yeah, they are the same size as a regular LED, just a hell of a lot brighter. I didn't even think to put it in the dash vents, that's a great idea Completely stealth...

If you end up doing the stuff, let us know how it works out

matt.... it was just an idea. i'm wondering how it would affect the shine of the light. i don't want whoever breaks into the car to be able to see what the hell they are doing. i wonder how bad it would hurt if the lights were deflected off of the rearview mirror into the eyes....

when you say piezo speakers..... any ideas? i'm not in the know on car audio.

Look on eBay for them. I have seen them go for about 6 or 7 bucks each and they put out around 125 db. That is really loud for inside the car, close to the persons head.

I am going to be doing something like this soon. I just got done with my stereo install and want more protection than just my alarm.

nah, it's not quite that simple. the object is to cause temporary discomfort to whomever attempts to break into said car. i want them to not be able to see what they are doing, and be unable to remain in the car due to the deafening noise.

thomas... thanks for the ebay hint.

Well, it would be "temporary", they'd only feel a little pain.

The problem is that no one pays attention to car alarms anymore, so unless you can guarantee that the thief won't be able to stay in the car, any alarm won't work. People are scum and will do whatever it takes to deprive someone of their belongings.
Wait till they break in and steal your alarm system, happened to a guy I knew in the A.F.

 it still doesn't hurt to try.

believe me, i'd love to set the car to where it shocked the hell out of you... but that's a potential lawsuit.

i don't want to put razor blades on the things i want to protect... cause i'm a clumsy bastard. i'd get all sliced up. maybe some razor blades in the t-top weatherstripping would be neat., except i wouldn't want to have to clean up the blood.

 the bright lights and noisemakers are the best i can think of.

Have it fill the car with tear gas or other noxious (but harmless) gas.

Here's an idea to go along with the sirens and lights. (BTW i know they make in car strobes that would work well for blinding/disorientation)

Anyhow my idea.. maybe not do able. Grab a air bag solenoid, and a 5 gal air tank, maybe even a empty fire extinguisher for more pressure. When the theif opens the door, have the solenoid kick in , and blast some 150-200psi air in his face. I know from working in a factory with air tools, high pressure air in the face combined with the noise scares the hell out of a guy.

You could hide the air in a vent or such directed right at the drivers face.

I have also seen weird speakers. INstead of producing sound, they produce a vibration. You supposed to mount them on the sheetmetal of the car, and they shake the car to the bass rather than eming a sound. Kinda lame for a sound system But you could mount it to the bottom of the seat.

I could imagine a theif hopping in the drivers seat now, strobes 125 db siren in the car. Compressed air in the face, and a vibrating seat that feels much like a electric shock.. dude would prolly runlike hell.

There is a frequency that causes humans to loose control of bodily functions, ie they crap/pee themselves. But then you'd have a mess to clean up.
A speaker that emmits a loud noise would have to be well protected because if a thief is bold enough to break into your car in broad daylight he'll take the time to disable the speaker too.

Best bet, double locking doors and bullet proof glass.

back to the top... here's a couple more ideas....

i'm kicking the idea around of an airhorn placed inside the car somewhere? they make compressors small enough where you could hide one behind the plastic panelling in the back of the car.

i think an air horn would scare the living hell out of someone.... depends on how well it's hidden.

viper (viper alarms) makes a siren they call a 'pain generator', i forget how much like $30-$40. They're made to hook up to viper alarms like i got but it's just a siren, should be able to hook it up to anything really. Supposedly you mount it inside the car and when it goes off it's almost unbearable to even sit inside it. When i get around to it, i think i'm gonna buy 2 just for good measure and toss them in my hatch under the security shade

The only downside to that is that you would have to run the pneumatic line to wherever you mount the horn. It can get up to about .5" thickness depending on the size of the horn. And if you have any false alarms, there goes your air reserve. If you don't run a spare, maybe you could fit a propane tank back there filled with compressed air. That would run for a long time

i still like the idea of nitrousoxide...when the alarm is tripped, nitrous is used...it makes a person nautious(sp) would that be illegal?

heh....nitrous wouldn't make them so much nautious as it would....high. They'd be giggling like an insane clown as they drove 45 mph through the glass windows of the local mini-mart in your stolen car

*** help your poor thirdgen if they happen to smoke, and light up when the car is full of N2O.......

not quite... if the nitrous is concentrated enough, it'll kill you.

i'm not planning on having rear seats in my car, so i'm not worried about running a small tank. who knows what i decide to do.

they found my friend's car by the way.... in a chop shop. all that is left is the engine and transmission.
