Changing Keyswitch?
Changing Keyswitch?
About a year ago I had to change the steering column in my Camaro. And because of my constant lack of money I found myself at the local junkyard only able to find a Firebird column. Which was no big deal with me except for the fact that the original column had the key with the protection chip and the one out of the Firebird did not. After trying to rig the column so I could run the chip's wire I managed to snap the fragile wire at the base of the switch.
SO! I ohmed the chip and then found a resister that matched and tied that in line instead. I didn't need the security so this plan worked fine.
Until recently I hadn't had any problems. BUT apparently GM was on the cutting edge of AI and the cars computer has gotten smarter over the months?! At very random increments the computer apparently won’t sense the resister and the car won't start. Then I wait the 5 minutes for the computer to reset and the thing starts right up. Sometimes it does it twice a day; sometimes I go weeks without having to deal with it. But it is a sneaky devil that is always lurking.
Is there a way I can reprogram the computer not to look for the chip? If I could figure out how to alter the column and run a new switch with protection chip what has to happen to the computer? Did Firebird ever make a protection chip keyswitch?
Thanks for what ever help you can give.
