can I install a togle switch to start my car instead of using the key
This might sound silly but I think it would be cool to start the car by using a toggle switch instead of the normal key. Which cables in the steering column do I need to splice and connect to my switch so that I can do anything the key does but without the key. In a word I would like to learn how to hot wire my own car like they do in the movies.
You'd need a few relays in addition to the switch. The wires you'd need are as follows:
Brown, awg, Accy.(radio and other unnessesary accessories)
orange, accy. (heater and other accessories)
yellow or purple, depending on year. Starter
pink, ignition
The wire you can draw your 12+ constant from would be the thick red one.
All these should be 12 guage wires.
Keep in mind that by doing this, it'll make the car very easy to steal...
Let me know if you have any other questions,
Matt

sorry, to shoot you down here, but that's pretty much a BAD idea!
you should put your time and energy into a security system with a started disable....not enable lol...
it is easy enough to steal these cars with out your mentioned 'no key' feature, and needless to say is more than likely against the law!
frst off, you cannot drive the car with the steering colum locked, so you will need to remove the locking capabilities of your column. yes the switch can be hot wired, just remove the whole switch from under the column and you can very easilly 'push to start' and leave it in run position. you can extend the wiring (using correct guage and soldered connections) and move it anywhere you'd like.
please do not take these kind of chances with your car, you can never be too careful these days.

Since his car is a 91... wouldn't VATS introduce yet another problem variable ?
Simple solution... jump the yellow and purple wire to the ignition switch on the column with a momentay switch (pushbutton).
Turn the key tur the 'run' position... push the momentary switch,
engine cranks/fires.
car runs.
ta-da.
*edited now that I'm in a better mood

speaking of hammer, that's pretty much all you need to break in and steal a thirdgen. VATs is another story, but there are a few tricks for that too.

hey im having a starting issue with my car and we've pinpointed it down to the wiring inbetween the starter switch and the starter itself....my car's an 84 and i think i saw a couple red wires....which harness would the wire that runs to the starter be on?...and also since the wiring seems to b the problem...i plan on splicing the old wire off and running another 10 gauge(will that be alright with no inline fuses?) wire straight to the starter.....does this sound alright? or will it mess things up?
thanks for any help!

Depending on where the break is, you could grab it under the dash, or on the firewall. I don't remember if it has an inline fuse on the specific wire though. If you get it under the dash, its going to be a harness that comes off the right side of the column, travels up the column towards the wheel, turns up in the dash towards the kick, then follows the kick to the terminal that connects the underdash harness to the underhood harness. It will have all the colors I listed above, plus a few more wires probably. On the engine compartment side, it is the fat harness that passes above the brake booster.
The color will be either purple or yellow, probably purple being that old.

well i was going to run it straight from the wire straight off of the harness that's mounted on the top of the steering column cuz i already have the column pulled down and the connectors detached.....and then i was going to run the new wire through the grommit in the firewall by the drivers side....but if i can locate that wire in the engine bay and know its the right one then i may do it that way....so then i dont have to split it up in that tight spot...thanks!!!
