I will explain this set by step:
1. Locate the ALDL (diagnosic connecter)under the dash board, drivers side, right of the steering wheel. It is mounted close to the top dont look far down by the pedals.
2.There are 12 terminals 6 top and 6 bottom.
they are lettered(from left to right) F E D C B A top row the bottom row is not used in this test.
3. Now get a small piece (2 in.) of wire and strip a little off each end or get a paper clip and break it in half. This will be your jumper.
4. Turn the key to "ON" but do NOT start the eninge.
5.Your check engine light should be lit and stay lit as long as the key is on.
6. Take the jumper and put on end of it in A and the other in B.
7.The check light should start flashing. Count the flashes. The 1st code will display in this fashion:the light will blink once pause and then blink twice quickly and will do that three times.
That is code 12. get it? One flash pause 2 flash=code 12. i.e. 4 flashes pause 3 flashes=code 43. NOTE: The electric fan should start while doing this so dont be alarmed.
8. So after it blinks code 12- 3 timespayattention it will start displaying the trouble codes that are stored in memory.
9. Write or remember what the codes are and look them up on this site or you can post here again and I have the book.
10. remove paper clip and turn off key. If you want to erase the codes there is a connector underthe hood by the battery two orange wires with a black connector disconnect the connector for 30 seconds and the ECM will reset. If you cant find the connector you can unhook the Neg. battery cable but the radio will need resetting.
hope this helps. Have a great day.

hey. I unhooked the black battery terminal and the lights still on. I think the guy at autozone might have already tried to read codes with his key or whatever but it wouldnt work. I might as well bring it to a mechanic and have them scan it or w/e. Maybe itll cost like 20-40.00...Damn I hate cars. P.I.T.A!

That silly key you referred to is the tool that is normally supposed to be used in jumpering the ALDL terminals to read the codes. If you disconnected the black cable from the battery to clear the codes, you have the cable removal process backwards. You are supposed to disconnect the red (positive) cable for about five minutes and then reconnect it.

Mist1006,
Unless the battery has been disconnected like mentioned in my previous post, the light will still be there regardless of whether the individual at AutoZone read the codes or not. If the battery was disconnected as mentioned and the codes were cleared and they came back. Then he has a problem that needs to be corrected.
