Wiring power windows, doors, hatch opener
Hey guys, i know you have probably seen this topic a million time but just keep with me here. Im not the smartest at electronics. I want to add power windows, locks, and hatch opener to my 83 Z. My 84 was totaled and had all of that so I want to put it in my 83. I was looking at all the wiring today and just got overwhelmed. There is so much! What connections am I going to need to make to my 83? Will I just have to make power connections to these items? Help please
Mike

Hello Mike,
If I might make a suggestion here. If the wiring harness is still intact in the 84,why not just remove the portion for the power windows and incorporate it into the 83's wiring harness. I can send you a schematic for the wiring from a 89 camaro, there shouldn't be that much difference between the two.

Yeah the wiring harness is still intact. Are you talking about like the whole wiring harness for the car? Sorry for my ignorance
Would all I have to do is trace all the wires to the wiring harness then unplug it......then plug it into my 83?

That is what I am talking about, just trace the wires from the switches in the console to the window motors in the door and the fuse box. You won't need to trace the whole harness, just disconnect the connector from the switchs and follow them from there.

Ok Mike,
It's in your e-mail and in answer to your question about having to cut anything, not if you take your time to do the job right.

The harness for the locks and windows should be somewhat seperate from the rest of the in-car wiring.
Behind the driver side kick panel, mounted to the chassis is a power distribution block to which this kind of accessory can be plugged into for power.
The hardest part should be snaking the wires across under the dash to the passenger side. And swapping the power window motors and locks.

Are those pictures from the 84 or 83? If they are from the 84, the first picture is the power door lock relay and the second picture is the power distribution junction box.

That's wierd...
The black thing in the second pic is the block I was referring to. Both my 83 and 84 Camaro's had them; the 83 came with power windows - maybe that makes a difference.
It looks like you might be able to pull the connectors from the block in the first pic, and use them in the block from the second pic. IIRC, the block just clipped into the metal body panel.

Those pics are from my 84 Z-28. That is the car with the power windows and locks. I was checking out my 83 today and I do not have any of those two items, most importantly the power distribution junction box i guess.
Can I take the distribution box out of my 84 and put it into my 83? Would that be the logical thing to do? If so How is the box going to get power? And what do I do with the other connections to the box? Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it

Ok Mike,
Yes, just take the box and put it in the 83. The schematic I sent you tell you what goes into it. As mentioned earlier, just trace all the wires that go into it and pull them out and use them in the 83 for the applicable systems. Most notably are the wires for the power windows, a wire for the power door locks, defogger, power feed from the fuse block, power seats, power mirror and a power feed from the instrument panel harness feed.

Ok Im gonna look at everything tommorow. Do you guys think the 83 will have the power feed from the instrument panel harness and the power feed from the fuse block already? Or will I have to unplug those feeds from the 84's fuse block and insturment panel?
On a side note lol the power locks and windows do not work anymore for some reason. My hatch poper doesnt work either but it clicks. I think it may have had something to do with some wires touching metal. If I replace those silver things in the fuse block will that solve my problem?

I just realized, that silver piece in the first pic is the door lock relay.
I mistakenly though it was from your 83.

Update:
Today I got all the wiring out. I have a question about the power distribution junction block. Specifically the one orange wire in the bottom left corner. Do you guys know what that is for? The one above that and the pink bottom right one both connect to the fuse block.

Ok Mike,
Down the left side of the junction block you have the following from top to bottom..
A= power feed from IP harness circuits.
B= defogger
C= power door locks
D= power mirrors
E= power seats (three motor)
F= not used
down the right side.
G= power feed from fuse block cavity
H= power windows.

Ok cool, looks like I wont have to worry about it then. Cant wait to have power windows and doors!
1 other question. I also have a power hatch poper. I looked at the wiring it connects too and it joined up with some other wires and couldnt figure out where it went. Could I just wire it up to something that has constant power?

Morning Mike,
There are two fuses in that circuit that are hot all the time. The hatch relay gets power from the ACC fuse while the motor gets power from the LID fuse. I am sending you the schematic in the e-mail.
