I pulled a complete dash from either a 91 or 92 Bird. There was a yellow box tied behind(factory ties). I was just wondering if it's a part for the air bag-if not what is it? Has a part #12077849. It has 1 plug on the end of it and it's yellow. I have a pic but it won't post. Anyone know? Anyone need it?
That's the coveted 'buffer box' that convertes the signal to operate the electronic speedometer found in the Firebirds.
Someone who has de-ECM'ed Firebird will need it as they usually throw away that box because they don't realize what it does.
I have no clue as I've never had any cars w/air bags. I lucked up on this car in the J/Y a few yrs ago. When I pulled the dash out(for my conversion)it was mounted back there.
They didn't have the air bags in 86. Check to see if it has a part number on it and call the dealership to find out what it is by the part number. I have seen one of those in an 86 bird in the junkyard but didn't pay much attention to it. This bird had the 145 mph speedo and the electronic dash.
I contacted a buddy of mine that works in the parts department at my local dealership and gave him the part number off that piece. That is no longer a valid part number in their computer and did not show a cross reference for it. All he could tell me, based on the information I gave him, was that it was a part of the airbag system. Which part it was, he couldn't tell me. Sorry.
I got the picture all right, I used that for the reference when I talked to my buddy this morning. The picture he had in his computer showed three possible items but no definite location for them except for the impact switch on the transmission tunnel under the center console.
Yhat is the speed sensor buffer for the speedo. Here is mine
Goes for $0 to $90 on Ebay, so you might want to sell yours. Also used in corvettes and cavaliers.
