popup lights..
Ok, I deleted the whole post, and am going to make it short and sweet..
Both my lights stopped popping up after winter storage.. This leads me to believe it is not the motors, since they are independent. Besides, they make no noise at all, so there is no power getting to them.
So its either the relays or the dash switch. My question is does one relay control both of the lights? If this is the case, then i'll have to diagnose the relay and the dash switch and hopefully get lucky. Let me know please before I have to buy new relays and a new dash switch.
I was told that the dash switch sends a signal to turn the lights on (this works fine), but it also independently sends a signal to the relay to pop the lights.. if this is true, it may well be the dash switch..
anyone? anyone?

I'll give this my best shot. If you are referring to the '91 in your sig, then there is only one relay located just to the left of the master brake cylinder (sp), its a square, and the closest to the motor from the master cylinder. I think, but am not 100% sure that the switch sends a signal to that relay to both pop-up the headlights, and turn them on.
I hope that helps at least a little, and good luck!

Edit: if the lights come on and the lights don't pop up, try pusing on the side of the light switch, as in from the door twards the center of the car. On my formy, I have to do this to get the lights to go down (I need a new switch).

your edit..
could you repeat your edit again, i didn't understand it.. thanx for your help.. The lights work fine, they come on when they are supposed to and shut off also, the switch seems to work as it should. however the motors to the popups do not function at all, and don't make any noise, as if they are not getting power.. i am sure its not the motors, since its unlikely both would go at the same time. i didn't have any problems with my lights before the winter, but after the winter i boosted the car (i boosted in the winter too, but never drove or put the parking break off, so the lights never even tried to pop, so i didnt notice) and they wouldn't pop up any more at all. from what i have read throught my searches, its either the relay or the switch, although i still don't understand how it can be the switch since it works fine to turn on the lights when they are off (daylight, i have a sensor), and it works fine to turn on the foglights (the secondary switch for parking lights, that has to be on for the foglights to come on with no headlights, and it works fine as well).. so the switch works as it is supposed to, but according to what i read, the switch also sends another signal to the relay for the lights, so if this is true, it may be the switch.. i'd like to know how to check whether it is the switch or the relay that is causing this, i just don't want to replace both at this time. I'd rather just do it manually then buy all these parts from GM, here in Canada parts are VERY expensive, sometimes up to 5x US price. and no importing either, they tax us like hell here, and charge us pretty much full price (had that experience with buyin computer parts, never again.. the price was less then half then here, yet after customs and taxes, it cost me more then buying it here)

Sure, I'll give it another go. Try wiggling the headlight switch side to side after turning it on, and if the lights then go up, its the switch, if that does nothing at all, then it's probably the relay. I'm not really sure how the switch controlls both the lights, and the motors, as I don't have a wiring diagram, I just know that somehow it does.
I'm by no means an expert in this, I just had the same happen to me this year, in that they would go up fine, just not down. I'm sure others here will be much more helpfull, but testing them beyond what I have attempted, is beyond my grasp, sorry
.
If you need a pic of where the relay is or something else, let me know, hopefully I can try to help
.

PS. What do you mean by "boosted" Jump-start?

yeah, Jump-start.. guess its different terminology here in Canada, lol.. Using cables and another cars battery, you know.. I don't remember shorting anything out, but it could have happened, who knows..
Nothing happens when I wiggle the switch, its pretty tight in there. I can't find my haynes manual either, so I'll have to go out and buy another tomorrow, oh well. They have gone up in price since I bought mine, damn..
I'll find the relay with the manual, I am sure, then we'll see.
Maybe you could help me with the switch replacement, I assume I have to take the whole dash off right?! No biggie I guess, but just wondering if there is an easier way.

You know, I havent taken my switch out yet either, so I haven't figured that out yet.
If you find out, let me know eh?
Good luck!

Are you sure about that relay, I could almost swear that is the connector for the windshield wiper motor.

On my 89, when I unplugged the wirepack on the left side of that black box, the pop up part of the lights quit working, then I tested the wiring, and it was energized when the motors were moving. Am I missing something here???~Joe

What is circled is the wiper motor. The headlight relay is just to the right of it between the wiper motor and the brake booster.

ok, will check..
I will check if that is the relay.. thanx guys.. i will give you an update..
btw, neubauej, how ta heck do you keep your engine that clean? what can I do to sparkle it like that? I try to clean it and get the dust off, but it still doesn't look anything like that. Proffessional engine clean? do they just spray it or what? I've never had that done before.

Thanks for correcting me guys, I was unaware that was the wiper motor relay.
The car pictured is flyinlow89's car, not mine. I only wish mine was that clean...
