Cruise Control questions

My cruise control has never worked on my car since I bought it. I was able to get my hands on another cruise control assembly pulled from a wrecked camaro. So now I am trying to replace parts to see if I can get it working.

I changed over the cruise control solenoid or what ever it is called that is located under the hood with the throttle linkage attached to it.

I have not been able to test drive the car out since it had a flat battery

I do have a couple of questions though. The switches pictured below should they we screwed in all the way so the ends are pushed in all the way unless you have your foot on the gas?

I am just trying to find out if they have to be in a certain position or not?

I'll replace parts one at a time and see if I can get the cruise control working.

They have to be screwed in and adjusted against the brake pedal and clutch pedal (if it is a manual transmission). Have you checked the Cruise Control module that is mounted under the dash?

Trickster do you have an article that describes how to adjust these switches?

Which module are you talking about under the dash? the rectangular box with a PSB inside of it with about 10 wires hooked to it?

My cruise does not engage, when i press the button on the indicator stalk it does nothing. Should there be resistance on the button when u press it?

My car is an auto.

Send it along like to look at it see if it helps in anway that would be good.

I changed the cruise control servo with another unit and that did not fix the problem. It must lie somewhere else.

Hey Rebel that test procedure is pretty good. I think I have nailed it down after running through the tests. It seems as the multi switch on my car is faulty.

So I will try and replace it and see if it fixes the problem, but it should be fine once I replace it as it failed the test

You should try and follow the procedures to find your problem. 1st you use the table to diagnose the problem area. Once you found the problem area you move to the the tests it sends you to. All you need is a multimeter.

I'll let you know how it ends up.

Now I am going to read up on replacing the indicator stalk as I can see the major PITA will be the wire feed.

Okay I replaced the switch and I get some sort of response from the cruise control now

But...

The cruise is not working properly. I set a speed say of 40mph let go of gas pedal and press SET when it hits 40mph. The car will drop below 40mph and then accelerate up to 42mph for example and keeps cycling like this. It gets jerky instead of a smooth control of the cars speed as it should.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this now? Vacuum leak?

I'm not sure if this would have any effect on the system, but didn't you do a modification where you put a switch in for your torque converter lock-out?

Trickster, Nah I did not put in a switch all I put in was a LED to tell me when it is locked/unlocked. The torque convertor works normally.

one thing if your cruise control is jerky,go to the cruise solenoid and manually pull on the activation cable.Make sure that it is completely smooth and free.If it is sticky and wants to stick and bind then you need to do some lubricating on the cable or throttle body for it to work right. That solenoid can't function correctly if things are old and gummed up in that cable assy.
