melted wire by the battery
melted wire by the battery
On my 91 RS 305, there is a spot next to the battery where a bunch of wires meet. I ran a power wire there for my amp. Everything was fine for a while.
Now one of the stock wires has all of the insulation melted right off it. It's prob like a 12/14 gauge wire that goes to a little white plastic cylinder. On the other side of the cylinder the wire is thicker. I haven't yet been able to pull the wire out of the tubing to see what it goes to.

How descriptive "this wire going to these other wires". Got the color of it or color of the wire it goes to (since the insulation melted off)?

lol. It *was* a red wire. They're all red coming from that spot. the wire in front of what I think is prob a fusible link is where the insulation melted off.
How do I fix this? Autozone's website has no matches for this part for my car. Is this a dealer part? What is the best way to splice it in to prevent future mis-haps, and how do I prevent this from happening again?
...last question, sorry. Is there a fusible link that goes to anything that if it wasn't getting power would make my car run like it was never tuned up?

if one of the fusible links was bad, would that cause the insulation to melt off? i'm thinking it might be the fuel pump relay fusible link? since this wire has been bad my car has started running progressively worse.
how many fusible links are there on a 91 305? what are they for? I have the surging problem that I have read alot about. I'm trying to see if this is somehow related.
All of this happened after a head gasket job. Do any of the wires from the junction box go near that area? Maybe one got pinched/stripped during that? What would cause the insulation to melt? Could it be robbing my fuel pump of power?
Everything tune-up wise is new except the spark plug wires, but they're not that old. New cap, rotor, plugs, fuel filter, egr valve, MAP sensor.
Sorry this is so long.

well, if anybody looks at this again, here's what I tried after stopping by the local shop.
I had no idea that the fusible link was just the wire. I'm not yet sure why the link went other than it happened when a tow-truck guy tried to jump it. But I think that the fusible link that went bad was for the alternator. The wire was bad unyil right before the "fuse" so i replaced the whole thin with an in-line fuse. Now if there is still a problem, I will know because the fuse will blow or the car will start on fire.
I haven't driven it far enough to really call it fixed, but The idle/surging was suggested to be the spark plug wires after all. After replacing every part I read about in posts, that was the only choice left. It seems better.
hope this helps someone...
