Adding rear defrost help

I would like to install the rear defrost into my '89. I hate scraping the frost off in the morning. I now have the rear window, the heated one. My question is are the wires there in my harness? Because that would be too easy right? Or do I have to wire it up? I have a '89 Firebird donor car that came with rear defrost. If I have to, I'll remove the wiring from the bird into my Camaro.

I did find the wiring diagrams, but I want to make sure before I take things apart.

The wiring for the rear defroster system should be located behind the left and right trim panels at the hatch lift support points behind the rear seats. And yes it should be that easy.

If you just have a blank faceplate where the switch should be, remove it and the connector should be stuffed in there behind it.

Thanks again, during winter break I'll be completely redoing my interior which will be the perfect time to wire it up.

You will also need the timer thing that goes on the passenger side near the computer.

Bingo, That "DEFOGGER TIMER RELAY" that you are referring to was not a component of the defogger system on the camaro's. On his car it is incorporated in the defogger control switch on the dash.

I did not know that. I now have learned something today. I guess the Camaros got the better design.

Just did this

And it was blindingly simple.

No, in my '86 Camaro none of the RR Defog wiring harness was there. I pulled it complete from a donor car including the connector for the back of the switch.

There was NO timer in my car, it's a function of the switch.

The passenger side of the RR defog goes to ground just below the rear hatch support.

The driver side is wired to a 10 gauge purple/white wire that runs below the sail panel trim and to the dash inside the driver side wire chase.

The purple continues across the dash and connects to the rear of the switch. That's really the only issue I had, routing the dang wire cleanly.

Good luck, it's really easy and a good project!

Re: Adding rear defrost help

I know this thread is dead but can anybody tell me if you can add rear defrost to a car without it and not have to change the actual hatch

Re: Adding rear defrost help

There are some aftermarket kits that will allow you to do this. They pop up on ebay, they can be old and not functioning, and it may look wierd on the glass once installed.
