Installing speedo recal gears....how?
My buddy and I attempted to install the proper gears tonight. We removed the cover for them and the "cone shaped" one came out really easy, but then the other one was on a shaft. How do we get that one off? I heard it was really easy, but it looked really tough and it was late so we didn't do it.
How do I get that gear off?
Thanks,
_Kevin

Press the tab on the clip down, place an appropriately sized open end wrench against the back of the gear, and liberally apply BFH to the wrench as necessary.

Okay, the gear in that pic has a big chunk taken out of it, that is just to show the nature of the clip, but the gear is whole, correct? After we get the clip off, do we slide it out off the tailshaft with the open ended wrench, (or whatever the part that connects to the driveshaft is?
And Apeiron, what does BFH stand for? Big F'en something I imagine.
Thanks guys!!

Big Fornicating Hammer. The drive gear is a press fit onto the shaft, so it takes a little coercion to get it on and off.

But pushing it off the shaft is the way to get it off, right?
Now I heard when putting the new one in, that I should soak it in hot water so it'll go on easier? Is that right, or should I just grease it and slide it on?

As long as you don't want to reuse it, you can even chew the old one up with pliers and break it to get it off.
Hot water might expand it slightly and make it a little easier, but I've never needed it. All I've ever used was a little vaseline on my.. umm.. shaft, and... then just kind of... beat it... yeah...

Cool thanks. Yah, I don't need the stock gears anymore, the stock rear was thrown away this morning and not fun to drive and no one would buy a 200lb 2.73 posi drum anyway. But Enjoy the vasiline.
