vats key

well im swapping out my steering column (90 firebird) just like the blue 1 up above! TO a camaro column, of about the same year. however, will the vats key work from the camaro's column-without any problems?or will i need to re-program or possibly disable the vats-under the dash somewhere?....so my new column/key will actually start the car!??? i dont know, but maybe someone {out here} might!?

regards, brad

If you aren't using your old key, the car wont start.

How to bypass VATS:
Take a digital multimeter and measure the value of the resistor on your original key. Go down to radioshack and get a resistor with a matching value + or - 50 ohms. The VATS harness is the orange cable that looks similar in dimensions to a telephone cable. It has a black plug under the dash with 2 pins in it. Cut off the plug on the opposite side of the orage insulation, and connect the 2 wires together inline with the resistor. Now VATS is bypassed and you can cut keys for your car at the local hardware sitr instead of going to GM

To help solve the problem of the swap, just take the VATS control module from the camaro and install it in the firebird as well. It will save time and headaches.

Ace Hardware

FYI - Ace Hardware stores (at least mine) can cut VATS keys - they are $19.95 - don't know if that's better or worse than a dealer, but I assume better.

AND - key cutting qualifies on the "anything you can fit into this bag 20% off" sale! I just got keys made today for $15.96 each!
