i need advice, and bad! my '90 iroc has a bad wiper switch that i hafta replace. i have it on order and it should be in today.......that was $90.00. this is the column switch with all the multi functions (turn signal, delay wipers, cruise) coming off the control lever.

i tryin to save myself $1000.00 worth of pain and suffering by coming here and askin the experts how to do this myself. What is involved with this? can i do it? does the steering wheel hafta come off? if it does, ive gotta air bag on mine, what about that?

You are needing to replace the switch with the wiring harness in the steering column? If so, you can proceed with the column in or out of the car. Your choice. Either way, you'll need to disconnect the battery for starters. Then disconnect the wiring under the column, including the yellow wrapped wiring that is wired to the air bag system. Once you've done that, wait for awhile to make sure that any stored DC dissapates from the air bag system. Remove the air bag from the steering wheel. Remove the steering wheel. Remove the c clip retainer and plate. You should now have access to the screws holding the turn assembly / harness. Remove and replace.

I may have missed or not spelled it out as someone else might do the job but, it'll give you an idea anyway.

Good luck

. I was under the impression that you simply twisted and pulled on the stalk in question to remove (after unhooking the wiring, of course). Earlier models only perhaps?

Matt,

are you just replacing the lever / stock or as I asked, are you needing to replace the switch & harness?

If you're doing the wiring harness & switch replacement, and need to pull the steering wheel, you'll need a steering wheel puller. You can purchase those at most auto parts stores for around $20.+- Some parts stores will lease tools to you if you want to go that way.

Hope that's what you're after.

thanks for your help wade
i did replace the entire switch. herers a quick list of how i did it on my '90 iroc. all by memory so there maybe a few mistakes.

1. diconnect battery
2. remove the 4 screws that secure the lower dash covering the steering column.
3. unplugg all of the wiring harnesses that go up the steering column. this include the yellow harness for the air bag, the air bag wire harness has some pin locks to prevent it from coming unplugged accidentally that must be removed to allow you to unplugg it.
4. remove the plastic shield located at the steering column brace. this shield is to protect the wire from abrasion. you need to remove it to allow the wires to slide freely up the column.
5 remove the 4 torx screws from the back side of the air bag. size 27 i think.
6 unplug wire from air bag and remove air bag.
7 remove the nut holding the steering wheel and pull steering wheel.
8. unplug the horn wire from the socket and remove wheel
9. remove the "C" clip.
10.pull the horn/ air bag socket assembly out of the way. you may need to pull some extra slack in the wire assembly from under the dash where the plastic shield was installed to get this assemply out of your way.
11. you need a special tool here for the steering wheel lock plate. this thing has a spring behind it that has to be compressed. they have em at most auto part stores to rent or buy. get it youll need it. once you have the spring compressed remove the lock ring from around the shaft.
12. remove the philips head screws from the turn signal assemply. 4 of em i think. again get you enough slack in the wires to allow you to get it outta the way. also dont loose the metal bracket mounted to the signal assembly this will fit into the groove on the new switch.
13. once that junk is out of the way remove the torx screws size 27 i think and i think there are 4 of em. they are the silver ones.
13. remove the torx screw located directly under the key switch. its a black one. once its removed pull the ignition switch outta the socket.
14. this will loosen the entire upper assembly to allow access to the wiper switch.
15. punch pivot pin out of wiper switch.
16 attach some strong string or wire to the wiper plug located at the base of the steering column.
17. pull the wiper switch with attached string or wire out of the column.
18 attach new wiper switch plug to string and pull string guiding the wires thru the column.
reattach switch with pivot pin and reassemble.
