Oil Pressure sensor/gauge issue

I have a 91 305 TPI, converted to carb.
Every since I got the car it has had running troubles.
One day it would run, the next no.

Anyway, the oil presure gauge, when I turn off the car, the needle will sink to the right, that is full 60 psi indication. Other times it will sink to the 0 psi direction. Is this normal?

Or is an absolute indication of a bad oil pressure switch? I just don't want to spend $40 more bucks, on top of the hundreds spent already, if I do not have to,

Re: Oil Pressure sensor/gauge issue

You can easily check if it is the sensor's fault or if the wiring/gauge is to blame.

Disconnect the oil pressure sender connector (above the oil filter). It is doable without jacking the car up. Now the gauge should read all the way to the right.

Now ground the tan wire in the connector. The gauge should read 0 pressure.

If you get the correct readings, it's either the connector (dirty) or the sensor that's causing the bad reading on the gauge.

Hope this helps.

Re: Oil Pressure sensor/gauge issue

Is there a special tool to get the switch off.
I can't seem to get a wrench or channel locks in there to get the thing out.

Did you already determine that the sender is faulty?

You just need to use channel locks and with some knuckle busting, it will come out eventually. I'd bet yours is still stock (like mine was) and won't wanna come out without a fight.

Keep trying different wrenches, channels locks, pipe wrenches, adjustable wrenches etc. It will come out.

It doesn't matter what the gauge does when the power is off.
