Good alternator not charging.
Good alternator not charging.
I brough my alternator in to get tested and results were fine, in disbeleif I purchased a new alternator and installed it and same thing. Ill charge my battery to 12.60 and when I start my car voltage drops to around 11.98.
I've read through the message boards and am starting to beleive it has something to do with my fan not working because my fan stopped working around the same time my alt stopped putting out a charge.
While im waiting for my fan switch to arrive Im looking for any help incase that is not the problem.. What about the fan fuse? is the fan fuse located with the fuses under the steering wheel?
Oh and for now my fan is running off a switch.. I pulled out the fan relay and hard wired the 2 main wires to a switch.. Since my fan works through a switch doesnt his mean my fuse should be ok?
Im new to most of this stuff so bare with me!
My car is an 88 firebird TBI code E.
Thanks

Re: Good alternator not charging.
check your fuseable links . there should be 3 orange wires together near the battery . feel the wires if one is blown/open you will know . they can be repaired/spliced .

Make sure that the Alternator is getting the reference voltage! Without it, the regulator will not function and the alt wont charge.

Similar situation for me a while back. Cooling fan wouldn't work, nor would the HVAC blower. There was no reference to the alternator. The ignition switch failed in such a way that there was no accessory power out of it, including the alternator sense voltage.

I can't believe nobody can give him a straight answer. *shakehead*
Yes, YigyYo, you are right, the fan relays and alternator "sense" wire are on the same fuse, it's marked "FAN" under your dash.
That sounds like your culprit.

Thanks Lou! does the fan relay have to be in tact in order for the alternator to work? the reason I ask is because I took it off for now. However I have a new fan switch comin soon, ill hook it up, reinstall my fan relay and check the fuse. Ill let ya know of the outcome.. just gotta wait a couple of days for my switch.

Re: Good alternator not charging.
No need for the relay to be connected. As long as the FAN fuse is ok, you should have power to the alternator wire and it should be charging.

WOW... A broken fuse this whole time.... I poped in a new fuse and now my battery is receiving a charge! and when I put my relay back together my fan will probably work too.... I could of sworn I checked the fuse.. oh well. Thanks again Lou!
