Headlights stuck in high

I had turned my high about 2 years ago and I can not get them to go back to low. I tried playing with the tilt wheel on the steering and nothing. Has anybody else had this problem? A '91 Formula. Andrew

Unscrew the cover the covers the underneath the steering wheel area. Its the big plastic piece that covers everything from your feet. Ok now get underneath there and look for the rod that controls your high beams and low beams. You can move the blinkers handle when your looking for it(the rod) so you can find it faster. Its should be located right down the steering column. At the bottom of the rod theres a plastic piece (This is the switch) The rod is supposed to slide right into it. In your case the switch might be broken or the rod might have slipped out of it. If the rod slipped out of it then you should push the plastic piece down and slide the rod back into the "switch". By pushing down you should hear a click, when you hear that your high beams should be switched off.

I had the same problem for a while. I got tired of blinding people on the road so i investigated and figured it out myself. Ill try to post of pictures.

Any questions? Hope this helps.

I had the same problem before. Is your tilt wheel loose? Mine was pretty bad and what i had to do, was put the wheel straight like i had no tilt and then push forward a little on the left side of the wheel and then pull the high beam switch and that got mine to go off. I have since fixed the tilt problem and all works fine now.

Like the above poster said though, the rod may have come out. Just throwing some more advice out there for you.

Re: Headlights stuck in high

I took a picture of this today. I had to do some things under the wheel, so decided to undue what i fixed a while ago and show you what might be going wrong with your high beams switch. This goes for anyone else who might be having this same problem. It really easy to put back in the hole, i figured i'd show you what it looks like and maybe save you some time searching and figuring out how to do this fix.

*note*
This is picture shows the rod and the switch when the rod has slipped out. This does not show a broken switch.

Re: Headlights stuck in high

I had the same problem when I bought my car- the high beams were stuck on . . reading these forums before I even became a member helped a good deal.

My problem was the switch had moved downward over the years from use, and the rod simply couldn't go down far enough to push the switch. So, after 2 hours of trying to fix it how the Chevy service manual stated, (Its a royal pain trying to work under there) I cut up a pencil top eraser and stuck it in switch hole pictured above. Inserted the rod and it worked like new. That was several months ago and its still working.

Oh, be careful not to go tugging on the rod too much or it might pop out at the end of multi-function lever. I did that. . . twice. . .

Hope this helps.
