high beams dont work!!!

ok i got a problem with my highbeams. my low beams work fine but when i switch to high beams all the lights cut off except for the marker lights in the bumper. i replaced the lights as the previous owner had a new set in the back when i bought it but that didnt help. i im thinking it might be in the hi-beam/low beam selector switch in the steering column but idk. what do u guys think? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: high beams dont work!!!

Sounds like it could be the dimmer switch. It is located down the steering column on the left side.

You can test it by removing the wire connector, remember which side the LT GRN wire is on, as that is the high beam circuit. Now turn on the head lights and switch to high beam. You should read 12 volts to ground from the terminal in the switch that the LT GRN wire was connected to. You should be able to find a ground lug near the left side of the steering column just under the dash. Look for the bolt with a few black wires under it connected to the steel under the dash. If you don't see 12 volts here, the switch is likely bad.

If you do get 12 volts at the switch terminal, then you probably have a problem with the wiring out to the lights. The first place to check would be the C100 connector on the firewall, just to the left of the brake booster.

Re: high beams dont work!!!

Hi guys, my name is Will and I own a '92 RS (V8 305 TBI) and I am experiencing some electrical problems similar to this. I am a senior in high school and this is my second car. I am not a very car savvy person but I do know some basic maintence stuff around my car. I'll give you a brief history. I bought this car back in April and it has been a very good ride. Since I recieved the car though, the high beams have NEVER, I repeat, NEVER worked. The were not burned out, but simply the turn signal lever never turned them on. Regardless to say, this wasnt that bad, as long as my lows worked I thought I would be fine. Well on Friday night (day after turkey day) I went to my car to go out for the evening and to my suprise upon startup my high beams turned on instead of my lows. So with all four lights on I was kind of suprised, but to my shock they would not turn off.

Now it's sunday and I cant turn the darn things off to just my regular low beams. I just popped the hood and disconnected the lights in frustration but I would really like to know what is going on. If anyone has any insight please let me know.

(secondly this is just kind of out there, my rear hatch brake light (the one on the back window) has stopped working as well, I suspected it was just a burnt out bulb but even upon replacing it it still doesnt work. Let me know what you guys think.)

that sounds about like the problem i may have. maybe your dimmer switch is out of adjustment or maybe have a bad connection. but lets see what some of the other guys say about this im sure they can tell you alot more than i can.

If both your high and low beams are on at the same time, I would think that you may have a short in the connector to the high beam low beam switch. One or the other set of lights should be on at a time.

Take a look at the thread xChAoSx posted a link to and then visit the link BigBabyLou provides. He has a few good photos and a good description of where the switch is and how to adjust it. I would pull the connector to the switch and test for voltage at both the TAN (low beam circuit) and LT GRN (high beam circuit) while operating the switch. If voltage only appears on each terminal when that beam is switched on, this would indicate a short some where in the circuit between the switch and the lamps. Likely the short is where the wire insulation on both wires has broken and the wires are touching. Or the interior of the connector is broken and the terminals are making contact, powering both circuits at the same time.

Let us know what you find...

My article Adjusting the Hi/Lo beam switch from some time ago. It should have the info you need.

Hope this helps!
