Amp Power line
Amp Power line
Hi,
I've recently started installing my new sound system, which includes two amps which I will wire seperately. I have a 92 camaro, so my battery is on the pass side, so I'd like to go through the firewall there. I ran my actually audio cable on the driver side, and had no problem with that. I also ran my remote, which shouldn't be a problem, right? The power is giving me some trouble. I used the search feature to try and figure out where the best place to go through the firewall would be, but couldn't figure it out. I checked behind my cylinder heads, and there's no grommet there (there are just what appear to be vac lines going through). I also see that the power antenna would work, but I a) can't really mess with that grommet because it's huge and beefy, and pretty much a solid now b) can't figure out how to get my wire down to where the grommet is anyway.
I figured out that the plastic hosed off electrics come out through a harness/plug, but I can't exactly go through that. I thought I might be able to snake my amp lines down the same plug and then drill a hole on the side of the pass (the right when sitting in car). I have the top and bottom parts of the dash off, and the side panels (the ones by your feet on the outside of the car). I'd really prefer running it on the pass side to eliminate noise interference by the power line.
So, bottom line is, where should I put it? (pics would be great)
Thanks!

Re: Amp Power line
YOu should be able to run it through the antenna grommet in the passengers side fender and it should come out by the passengers side kick panel thats how i have mine run
Re: Amp Power line
how'd you get that grommet apart? it's rather strong. could you show me a picture of it? also, I assume you followed the hosing with all of the electrical wires from the engine bay down, but how did you actually get your wire to go to the grommet (IE, how did you manage to grab it?).
Thanks for your quick reply.

if you take the kick panel off on the inside you should be able to push the grommet out if you crack the passengers side door between the fender and door you should see the grommet its kinda tricky to get the wire in there but it can be done you wont be able to put the grommet back with the amp wire in there but it shouldnt hurt anything
Re: Amp Power line
ah okay that helps. I know exactly what you're talking about. I guess I'll dremel it out or something like that. Thanks for the info. I'll update once I get it installed. I'll probably make an electrical tape ghetto grommet :P.

Re: Amp Power line
you may want to put this in "Car audio"
on my 91 I found a rubber plug in the fire wall that was not used, its on the pass side just off the fender wall about 3/4 down the the wall.
will try and get pic for you.it could be used for something on you car depending on options (i dont have AC could be for that.)

Re: Amp Power line
can not really see it on the inside, its under the carpet.(if you cant find it I can go and pull it up and take pic may take a few days
)
i had to push a wire coat hanger through the hole(engine side)and tape the power wire to it then pull to the battery.

hm... I looked for half an hour, but I think I figured it out. Because I still have all my AC stuff I have another bolt like the one above your blue line in the picture. It's definitely holding something in, because I can't pass anything through the hole :P. I might have to go with the Antenna route. Someone who used that method, what worked?

Re: Amp Power line
too bad..
well i hope the antenna rout works out for.
you could all ways drill a hole. use a small mirror to see the fire wall and using the the two bolts for reference drill from the inside.

Re: Amp Power line
I got it sorted out, thanks for all your help. Hopefully someone using the search feature will find this and find it helpful. I found that you can pull the plastic piece by the wheel wells and just route it through there. Was rather easy. I got the subs up by 10 last night, and it was nice to hear them a bit (don't worry, they were quiet, I'm not going to wake the neighbors). I'll burn a test cd tomorrow and see how they sound.
Thanks everyone, and especially sid rs91.
